gbta lighting?????

i have a 12g jbj nano. i used to have 1 24w pc on the tank and the bta was ok not thriving at all. i decided to give it more light so i ordered the hood with the 2 24w pcs. now my bta runs and hides when i turn on the lights? does anyone know whats going on? what do i need to do?

Adam,
I had a GBTA in the same tank. Then I upgraded to the 150watt k-2 viper hqi . He ran under the rock structure and eventually died. Without a doubt I belive that the nanos are to shallow of an aquarium for really intense light when it comes to an anemone. I have yet been able to keep one for an extended period of time in that tank. I belive the lighting being to strong along with the constant flucuations in water due to the size of the aquarium plays a role.

lol...... i would almost expect that with the light you put in, but i have 48w total. i have gsp, a devils hand leather, zoos, shrooms, a frog spawn and 2 orange monti caps. they are all doing great. anemones supposibly need a lot of light.

I agree that I had a little overkill with my choice. However all my other corals thrived.

As far as anemones needing alot of light, that is true but only for certain types. I feel that the BTA is ones of those anemones that does better under lower lighting.

Keep in mind what I said about consistant water levels. with such a small aquarium and anemones being very sensitive, temp change from when the lights are on to when they are off can be enough to push them into hiding.

I guess the next step would be to make sure that your temp nearly stays the same from night to day. and that all your other levels are consistant. from that point I would begin to feed your anemone during the daytime, almost training him that its ok to be out and active when the lights are on.

cool. i'll try to figure something out. thanks for all your help. one more question though. what do you feed the gbta? i have to coach it to eat mysis by pretty much holding it in its tentecles until he takes it. which can be a good 15mins or so. and he is too small for silversides.

Adam,
They have baby silversides which are the size of mysis. However I feed mine slices of pealed shrimp from any grocery store. You can also just take the regular silversides and almost fillet them. Then cut little pieces of the meat and place it as close to the mouth of the anemone as possible. Do you have clowns that go in the BTA?

12 Gallons is probably too small to attempt an anemone is, period.. At least, that's my opinion given the research I've done on them..

Not enough volume, no where to go if they don't like someone that's nearby, and not enough depth to adjust to lighting.. Not to mention that they can be effected by chemicals emitted by other inhabitants in the tank..

I'd wait and put one in your 90..

that is not good. When they bleach, and then retract that small, it is very hard to get it to recover.

you have to get it to eat.

To feed it, you want super small food, frozen cyclopese, blend sripm up until it is almost soup.

Turn off the flow in the tank, and then use a turkey baster to target feed a could of food around it. Leave the pumps off for 15 minutes at least. Hopefully it will have gotten to asorb some of the food.

Do this 2 to 3 times a day. Change water a lot, every couple days.

Are you using Carbon? With the diversity you will need a lot of carbon. the leathers are great at creating toxic water. BTA can be very sensitive to the toxins.

if you can get it in some direct light, that would help too.
