Good afternoon all,

After a bit of advice regarding my GBTA....the nem has been in the system for several months without any issues, feeding well and hosting my Maroon Clown from day 1.

On Sunday evening I noticed that surprisingly the clown was not in view and soon after saw that that the nem was not where I left it Saturday evening!!

I have covered the powerheads and now muse on what may have caused the issue??

I have not made any alterations to the lighting/flow in several months and am at quite loss as to what has happened....without tearing the reef apart I cannot see the nem in the rockery at all, but as the clown is always inside too I suspect the nem has gone into hiding for some reason....

Everything else in the system looks perfectly well so I'm fairly certain that the water is in good shape, although I must confess to not carrying out water tests at home - rather I take a sample of water to my LFS periodically for a check up, so I cannot confirm the results as we speak....

I did think that the nem looked really healthy last time I really looked at it and wondered if it might ever split....would the nem go into hiding to split maybe?

Any thoughts/comments really appreciated

They move around. I had a RBTA that split 4 ways. 3 of them moved to the back of the rocks, 1 stayed in front.

I currently have 6 BTAs in my tank. One of them stayed put where I put it, even though it is totally being shaded by another anemone that moved halfway across the rocks to where it is now.

You never know with nems. They do what they want.

Charlie,

Thanks for responding matey :)

Yes they can and will move where they want to....part of the "fun" of keeping nems I guess, but mine has been stationary for several months until this episode??

If it has decided to hide and split, how long would you think it/they would remain hidden from light and/or food??

BTW, the clown is almost exclusively within the rockwork too which leads me to think the nem is in there somewhere - I hope so anyway...

Anyone else have any thoughts at all???

Well,

15 days later and the bubble tip is back in the sunlight....in almost exactly the same spot it was when it went off on walkabout!!:wavehand:

It is a little washed out looking but healthy other than that....just need to keep an eye out for any clones that appear, if it went off to split that is:beer:

Could have been anything from water flow changes to something bothering it. Un-like fish, they do not have eyes to see where they are going. They just move, try it out and move again if not happy. Somewhere along the trip they will hopefully find an area that has good light. Sometimes people get mad because their bubble moved behind some rocks. (yet it has no clue if it is in front or behind your rocks :) )

I had a gbta that moved. After he moved I found a small Aiptasia growing on the rock. i'm assuming it bothered it enought to make it move.

I had the same thing happen. BTAs like to hide their foot and extend their tentacles in the flow - at least that is the popular train of thought. They don't like getting blasted in the mouth and/or foot.

One of my BTAs didn't like where he was and moved behind the rock right in front of the vortech. Crazy flow right in the mouth and no light. Probably the dumbest place you could ever place an anemone. Sat there for 2 months before it decided to move again. Ended up in the exact same place it started from. These animals are weird.
