I just completed the PADI open water diving program. I would like to eventually buy all my own gear, and want to get good quality gear right away.I was wondering what other people use and suggest. I realize that it is mostly going to be personal preference when it comes to gear, but just curious what others like and find to be quality gear seeing as though I am new to this hobby. Thanks!

Cressi Ellipse Titanium Alaska / MC7 regulators, Aqualung Slingshot fins, Cressi Focus mask w/ corrective lenses, Suunto Gekko computer, Cressi S116 BC w/ integrated weights.

Try as much different gear as you can first, get a feel for what you like and don't like. For instance, some folks like fancy adjustable (while diving) regulators, I don't like them. The important thing is that the gear is comfortable for you, and works well.

i second bills recomendations try everything first then decide on what you feel most comfortable with

for example i dive with a back inflatable bc and lots of people do not like them i love mine

TRY EVERYTHING YOU CAN! Most dive shops will let you try out different BC's and regulators either in there own pool or in a local. ALSO, if you find you dont like something after 2 or 3 uses they will usually let you excahnge it for something else.

IMO, I would get a BC with as little bulk as possiple. Preferrably a a steel back plate. i.e. dive rite, halcyon. This eliminates the need to wear a lot of weight around your waist. Also, I would purchase a regulator that you can use in freezing water conditions. I noticed you are in Wisconsin and you will need this if you decide to go further into diving. Doing deep dives and ice dives.

Also, if you are going to do local fresh water dives if you cant afford dry suit yet. I would look into getting the AQUALUNG SOLAFX 8mm wetsuit. I own one and love it.

O and by the way welcome to the Hobby of Scuba Diving if you think reefing is expensive wait till you start blowing your wad on scuba gear. I have about 4k in my gear and I still dont have a dry suit or my Divemaster License and I am only a 1.5 years into being PADI certified.

Given the exspence of dive gear, I went with a name known for reliability. I like the scubapro products. My BC(nighthake), dive comp(uwatec), reg and first stage(mk25/s600) are all scubapro. My semi-dry wet suit is buy henderson and my dry suit is a DUI CF 200. I've been diving boston harbor islands for the past 5 years and my gear has never given me any trouble. As for my dive buds, its a different story...
