Gem Tang

I think these things are really overrated, if this fish was as common/cheap as an Achilles or Powder Blue, I do not think most people would drool over them.

Dejong just got another 5 in this week. And I just got back from the lfs and they had 3 left from the 5 or 6 they got last week. A few months ago there were some available too. I have never seen as many gems as I have seen lately.

They go around 1000$ here, or 800€.
Before the 2000s , am aware that De jong was getting over 5 gems per shipment a time where Gem tang were frequent. 800euro is still an ok price for the fish, considering black tangs too can be as expensive.

Freight charges is a big factor in determining the difference in price of Gems....

Freight for Europe are direct and much less costly.. while for US it's much much expensive, and fish has to go through transit.... :)

I agree. But, I am also guessing that this opinion won't go over well on a Gem Tang thread.

Also, if the standard ocellaris clown coloration was rare, everybody would fall over themselves to get that version, which is much better looking than the designer clowns that people pay huge money to have now.

I hate designer clowns... there, I said it. I prefer pure natural fish.

Gem tangs common? Could have fooled me. I spent 2 weeks diving SA and Moz last year from Aliwal Shoals to Praia do Tofo and saw 2 the entire time. Both were huge. They are NOT common.
