So I guess $2,500 for one is a rip off then..
Wow, I wish I can afford one.
I know of a person in N. Florida that got one a week ago. He paid $2500 for the gem and a red carpet anemone together.
The price is higher in the LFS because like I said they send you other fish along with the GEMs. Most LFSs won't receive a direct shipment from Mauratius but the wholesaler will. In return the wholesaler can't move a $40 butterfly for the $100 they paid for it. So that butterfly goes out at its normal price or slightly higher with the Mauratius tag on it. The difference in price is thrown on top of the Gem tang. That's how they offset the prices of the other fish. Also a Lfs in NY brought in 4 gems in one shipment last month, those are were the other two small ones were that I mentioned that were under the previously posted sizes by another member. I wish people would really do their homework before they comment or try to disprove my comments. That alone makes 3 Gem Tangs in a 25 mile radius that were all 2" and under. Yet only two were collected in that size range? That's three in a small piece of the US and doesn't include any other countries that got them in.
Airfreight from anywhere to the US is expensive. I can get rates to HKG under $1 per kg w/o fuel & security surcharges but to get it here from HKG is over $4 a kg.
Beautiful fish that's for sure! They are cheaper than I thought they would be. I thought I would have to try the starfish trick on my liver to buy one eventually.
The price I was given and actually had paper work for was 1300 apiece. Shipped to Newark airport, but if we didn't get 10 gems other things had to be ordered. Some were fish that you can buy for 30-50 bucks but would have costed us 100-200 on the same fish. I had 9 people ready to go and couldn't find a tenth. In the meantime 3 people backed out, and as soon as the info of not getting 10 of them and we had to order other fish that pushed a few others away. What happens if ten people put their money in and 8 Gems come in?
