generator - invertor technology needed?

Hi gang,

I've been looking into buying a generator as backup power for my 180gal for longer term power outages. I've been reading that they have generators with "invertor technology" that output a stable voltage for electronics like computers. How stable does the voltage need to be for our pumps, lights, etc? I was just curious if people are able to run the aquarium equipment on normal (cheaper) commercial type generators.

thanks

Pumps are pretty forgiving; lighting will be somewhat unstable, high end controllers etc. are likely to suffer under fluctuations.

Hi guys, thank you for the replies. PRDubois, I'm glad you posted! I think my APC UPS is one of the RS series, it is a BR1200. I went to APC's website and they listed it under RS. By regulating power you mean just plug the UPS into the generator and then plug equipment into the UPS correct?
