Generic Ballast Or Brand Name?

Im getting a 760w - 2x250W HQI, 4x65W CF Fixture from AQUATRADERS.COM. Everyone is saying that the 250w ballast are really 150w, and tha i will have to replace them.

My question is, instead of going out and getting a Ballast for $150 because its got some aquarium brand name on it, can i just go to my local electric store or home depot and pick up a ballast for 60 bucks. Will that still work fine?

If the HD ballast has the correct ANSI designation, it will work, although it might produce different coloration or efficiency than another model.

Back in the day, I thought I could get parts at HD. That's not the case. However, your local electrical supply house should have a good selection of MH ballasts. Make sure they come with ballast boxes or housings. Unfortunately, you probably will not find anything cheaper than 70-80 dollars.

As for ordering lights from aquatraders, I have ordered T5 fixtures from them before and needed new ballasts VERY soon there after, just my experience.
