Anyone know how long the male holds the little ones for? A search for gestation period in the Seahorses forum yielded nothing.
Is it temperature dependant?
Luis,
This could be an opportuninty to write a "how to" book a la Wilkerson or Hoff
Yes it is temperature dependent. Usually if kept in the mid 70's it should be 14 days. H. reidi is also known to get pregnant almost immediately after giving birth so an adult pair will produce a new brood every two weeks if conditions are optimal. BTW the fry are considered very difficult to raise.
Wow, thats short. The gestation period on my H. fuscus is 17-24 days depepending on temperature. Then again, fuscus have larger fry so maybe that makes sense.
The reason that H. reidi fry are so hard to raise is that they are very small. They can have many 100's of fry at a time. Their close relative H.ingens has even smaller fry. Even advanced hobbyists that have raised other species have trouble with these two. Although greatly out numbered by reidi broods dwarf fry are actually larger then reidi at birth.
