Getting a 55 Gallon (Need help)

My limit is $200 for a tank, lights, and sump/refugium. I will buy the water, salt, and etc as time goes on I guess. Lol I will go slow. I want to make sure everything is right and stable. But because of my limit, I need to get this stuff on craigslist. I live in south florida by the way, near miami.

How hard is it to transfer items in a tank to a bigger one later on?

I think it's a good deal

I think it's a good deal

I have a 56 gallon tank that came with a stand only. It was $240 something. Then I kept the empty tank for nearly two years because prices of lighting, skimmers, live rock, sand and etc scared me. I see that your tank already has a sump, and lighting too. I still don't have a sump they are more expensive than the tanks I don't really know why. i just have a canister. I think 55 gallon is a pretty decent size but remember you can only keep small fish. You can't keep any large angels or tangs, but I have a yellow tang and two clowns with other live stock in mine . Think about other stuff too you will have to buy a skimmer, live rock, live sand, fish, invertebrates and corals if you plan to keep which would cost you more than 3 times your tank worth. And if you buy a larger tank you would have to upgrade everything which would cost you more. If you have that much money to burn get a bigger tank if not I think that tank is a good deal! :celeb2:

I live with my parents now, that's why I want to upgrade later. Lol when I move out, I will want to upgrade to a bigger tank.

Okay guys, what do you think about this find for $200? It's a 75 gallon. It's the tank, hood, stand, Refugium, protein skimmer, and led light. The only problem I see is that it is outside. I am worried that the wood is warped because of rain and outdoor weather. It seems fine in the pictures though. What do you guys think?

Does not look too bad. Dirty as sin. If the stand is solid wood and not particle board you could probably make any repairs needed. That being said I would go and make an offer of $125 based on the unknowns. Potential issues with the stand, does it hold water, hours of clean up etc..... remember you as the buyer are the one assuming all of the risk.

The light... test the light. That will work for Fish but probably not corals. Don't be afraid to negotiate a fair price. If the tank is good and does not leak and the glass is clear and not scratched up $50 - $60. maybe slightly more if the tank is drilled (reef ready) but it does not look to be. Stands.... hard to value a stand... if its been sitting outside in the weather for any amount of time I'd say $0 - $20 max. Sump (ditch the bio balls) $25 tops. The skimmer looks really small for that size tank but cant say for sure. hope this info is somewhat useful, I am just trying to help paint a clearer picture...

200 is too expensive, especially the fact it has been kept outside!I wouldn't pay more then $60.it is only worth 10-30...

That is a very good stand and canopy. I had one . It will be fine if you put in a new floor. I think that one sells for slightly more than $500 on DrFS. The canopy is around $300 new
Clean up the tank and see what it look like.

Doesn't seem like to bad of a deal as long as everything is in decent shape. I'd check that stand over real close if it's been outside for awhile. Skimmer looks a bit small also. You will probably want to upgrade that before too long.

i've come to the conclusion that anything you see on craigslist that you think is a decent deal is sold before you decide to buy it...

I have learned to not exclude higher priced listings. I actually scored my current 120, stand, 300lbs of aragonite sand, 3 acrylic overflows, 2 pumps, and a protein skimmer for $400 he was asking $950. All brand new.

yeah i see stuff listed for the price of new and the next day its gone...i swear they price it high as possible and take whatever offer they get cause no one can be stupid enough to actually pay what they're asking

That's an awesome deal. WOW. How do you do it?

I always feel stupid asking people to lower their price, because some people take my offers like a joke. I have gotten responses like... "You have to be kidding right?" and I only lower the price about 1/4 of what they are asking. People are aholes. lol

For one I don't lowball people but I do explain why I came up with the number. You always see package all or nothing deals.... Frankly I or no one else for the most part are looking for that. We all have our ideas on what we want to build. Long story short he had been trying to sell it for a couple of months. It was way out toward Youngstown so not convenient by any stretch for me. I told him what I was building and was really only interested in the tank and not really anything else. I explained that even though it had never seen water it was 5 years old and I was assuming all of the risk blah blah blah... I ended up offering $200 for the tank if he would sell just the tank but said I'd do $400 if he wanted me to take all of it. He called me back a little while later and accepted the 400 offer. I traded and sold off what I didn't want etc. guys want to sell it as a package because it takes time to part it all out. They always tell you just sell what you don't want.... Well my friend that takes time so I am not going to pay you the premium and do,all the work to part it out.

Here it is 8 months later...
