ok so i got some DR from a local member this weekend... awesome rock at a greater price..

but dont have the new tank yet...

i want to get the rock started.. all i have is a tub; power head; air pump and air stone..

do i really need to have light (will any light source do or does it need to be either T5 etc?)
also do i have to keep a skimmer with it?

any advice is greatly appreciated...

also if any other members have DR for about $1/lb hit me up...

it depends on what you are looking to accomplish. If I were to do it, I would go as darka s possible so you dont have algae growth. this way you can Cook the rock to get all the benefical bacteria in it and not have any algae growth.

ok so light isnt necessary.. kewl... i'll just cover the tub with its lid..

what about skimming? will there be a need?

1. No light needed
2. No skimmer needed
3. Add bacteria like microbater 7
4. Add pollution if you want. (ie: sugar free soy milk, or dead fish/shrimp) to accelerate the process

How long until you are looking to utilize it?

Assuming your current tank is not high in PO4, I would also utilize the water from it from W/C's.

Not sure what the nature of your dead rock is... if it is the BRS or Marco variety you may want to look into giving it an acid bath prior to use. I was amazed at how much "stuff" came out of mine.

it does look like its either of BRS or Macro but i got it from Travis from the club and he told me that he boiled/baked and sunned it out....

it will probably be in the tub for about 3-4 weeks..

using water from the W/C is a great idea thanks.. i have little to no PO4...

That's hardcore, Brett. But I like it. :D

A skimmer would probably actually slow your roll on cooking. Just a heater and powerhead and you'll be fine, Kevan.

Works great. Some leave in much longer (20-30min) but I didn't want to lose too much material. Supposedly most of the PO4/Copper/Heavy metals/etc - are stored in the outer skin of the rock.

After etching I soaking in RO/DI. After 3 days PO4 was .03. Changed water and after 7 total days -> PO4 0.0. I then cured/cycled via bak in a bottle -

After reading others doing the same w/ BRS/Marco I didn't even test. I actually soaked it in bleach for a week prior to the etch... but I don't think this step did much. I was hoping it would dissolve some of the fossilized sponges but it didn't.

Odd, I used All Dry Marco Rock right out of the box. Didn't even rinse it off and my Phosphate is pretty darn low @ 12PPB Hanna after 8 months of the tank being up and running. Seems like a waste of time to me, But that's just an opinion...

Maybe Marco is much cleaner than BRS Eco... if you guys could have seen the slude in the acid water and rinse buckets...

BRS/Marco

BRS/Marco

I have seen and lifted both and IMO Marco is Far Superior to the BRS rock both in weight and poreosity (Is that a word) as you get twice as much Marco per pound of BRS. Marco is much lighter and cleaner rock and you just get more for your money.
