im getting 2 lime green mantis shrimps today and my question is im running a cheap walmart HOB filter (100gph) should i run a carbon pad?

other question,

the two mantis shrimps are the pounders, will a glass heater work or no?

also if i cycle today and dont add mantis till tomorrow should i run carbon today, take it out then run nothing.

pretty much what should i have in the HOB?

(the tank is a 10 gallon, 5-10 lbs of LR, 10-15 lbs of LS)

thanks

josh

Additionally the mantis are more than likely NOT compatible. Mantis shrimp are solitary creatures (unless mating and then only during the act generally) and one or the other will likely end up dead unless they are placed in a very large aquarium with tight-fitting burrows and plenty of food.

Concur on the issues that will arise with a 1-day 'cycle' as well...

If you wanna cycle fast ive cycled 3 tanks in 24 hour periods using Bio Spira and its worked great for me, otherwise i dont i think id put them in after 2 days

i was under the impression that since i was using LR, SW, and LS out of my 2 year old 75 gallon that cycling would not be as necessary?

can someone tell me y it would not be nearly the same as dropping him in my 75 gallon?

and you guys says a glass heater will be ok for a pounder mantis?

also the guy who has them has the 2 of them in a 2.5 gallon and says they are ok.

should i put them both in the 10 and see what happens or jus put one in and figure out something to do with the other?

also destiny man i love the tales of tim!!!!

If your using water from a cycled tank as well as Live sand and live rock you should be fine. Throw him right in.

Using rock out of an existing tank is different, you didn't mention that before. You should have no to minimal cycle. You may want to watch for a small ammonia blip. Running carbon and perhaps a waterchange if the ammonia is measurable should be all you'll need to do.

yeah the rock and water are out of my currently running tank, some of the sand is and some is from a bag of LS.

as for two of them in a 10 gallon...i was told they are very small now and both in a 2.5

ok well i just picked up a lil 25 watt Penn Plex heater for $2.99 i hope that will be enough. and i also just thought id post a few pics of the tank right now, before i add the heater, more LR, LS, and the mantis.

adding the exact same things may be ok, but we all remember biosphere 2. The problem was there were too many microbes, so the oxygen levels dropped and ALOT of things died (not the people), but still. The concentrations of bacteria in a given amount of sand in one environment may have depend on the size of its environment. Just my HYPO

lol...ok...well i went out and got a Mini-Aqualight tonight for $25 and it looks great, hopefully the tank temp will rise so i can add the mantis!

well im down to only one mantis now...

the one i have left seems to be pretty active, i see him pop his head out of the rocks a lot. i bought 3 small hermit and a snail, but as far as i can tell he hasn't touched them. i feed the 3 damsels brozen brine, maybe twice a day and im sure some floats by the mantis but should i be trying a more direct method of feeding?

what about live brine?

The one day cycle when you set up a new tank with mature substrate and LR is so that any nasty gasses desolved in the water can come out before you add life

well i thought he had died but...HE'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!

i hadnt seen Silvio (my mantis) in nearly two weeks and my brother said that the tank dropped to around 60 degrees one day, so i kinda thought that he hadnt made it, but i didnt want to mess with the rockwork becuase ive read on here and other places that when they molt you dont see them for a while and i didnt want to stress him out if he was alive.

well last night i saw him and was so excited! i kinda thought that he may be alive because i had 3 blue damsels and there only one left now and out of the 2 peppermint shrimps i put in a week ago, only one is left.

anyway, i am happy.

let this be a lesson for anyone who hasnt seen theres in a while, do not panic!!!

thanks
