getting a regal angel to eat....

Thats great, mine like to eat the small pieces the tangs miss, maybe try tiny pieces in with whatever else they like.

Tracey2

I've had my Regal Angel for just over 5 years and she is a very shy eater. I feed her almost exclusively NLS pellets, but she will also eat Spirulina enriched brine shrimp and fresh (cherrystone) clams on the half shell. Unfortunately, in recent weeks, she is eating less and exhibiting what I think might be an internal parasite infection (stringy poop). I plan on treating with Pazipro, but I've never treated for worms before. I hope all goes well.

wow, thats great to hear 5 years, I hope mine make it that long. Do you add any vitamins to her food? I treated a regal in QT with prazi and she did stop eating during treatment, yours will hopefully do better being used to captivity etc. I have read you can add a little prazi to food but have to be very careful not to overdose.

Anyway, here I go again trying to take over rgentry's thread,:uhoh3:

Sorry Tracey2, I didn't mean to put you on the spot. I thought you had started this thread when I commented about my Regal Angel... I must be getting old AND lazy because I didn't even read who had started this discussion. So I apologize to rgentry123 as well.

Tonight my Regal had a bit more of an appetite. Besides the possibility of internal parasites which may be affecting her appetite, she was definitely stressed out by the Achilles Tang that had been harrassing her. I have since removed him. Between the two fish, I guess I'm more attached to the Regal Angel.

rgentry123, the last fish introduced to my DT was an Achilles Tang, a Desjardinii Tang and a Moorish Idol about 1 year ago. The tangs were much smaller than the Regal ( 2"-3" vs her 4"-5"). Everybody had been very healthy and eating well. But the Regal has ALWAYS been a very shy and deliberate feeder the entire time I've had her... and, believe it or not, she has ALWAYS had stringy poop ( for over 5 years). I just never knew it was a symptom of a possible internal parasite infestation until recently. No other fish have ever had this symptom in my tank. As the tangs grew the past year, they became more aggressive besides being their normal, extremely active, selves. The Regal has never grown much and has always been a very passive fish. I have recently removed both tangs, so I'm still unsure if the lack of appetite is from stress or parasites. I guess I'm waiting it out right now.

I got my 5.5" Indo Regal from BZ about 7 weeks ago.

The Regal is definitely interested in something floating (yes, tried floating pellets), since it is usually checking out the surface. Wish I could supply what it wants....DFS (Dead Fish Swimming). :sad2: It does pick a black worm, brine shrimp at times, but not what one would expect a fish this size to eat.

btw, the photo (avatar) is my Regal that I photographed in my 135g in 1978!!
I've had fish from bluezoo do the same thing. It must be something they are feeding them?

Guys, how long before your angels started eating? I got a small magestic that I haven't seen eating with gusto, but is investigating things more (got on black Friday). I've seen brown solid poop, so he must be eating something. I've been putting new chaeto from the fuge each day to give new pods, and some rock with sponge, and mysis, purple seaweed, and bloodworms soaked in garlic. Will he ever feed aggressively (like a tang) or do they just pick?

I had the same issue with my bandit angel until I started feeding Roggers Reef Food.
Most amazing food ever...Talk about GUSTO

My Regal angel has never eaten with gusto. She might be just an incredibly shy individual when compared to other Regal angels (although Regals as a whole are more delicate than some other angels).

I've had experience with French, Emperor, Koran, and Majestic angels. I've also had a Blueface angel juvenile. The Majestic and BF juvenile seemed to be on the "shy" side when they would eat. But eventually they would even eat pellets in competing with other fish. Incidentally, I didn't have all these fish in one tank at one time. Currently, I have a Regal and Majestic in separate tanks. Both fish are about 4"-5". I've had the Regal for over 5 years and the Majestic for over 2 years.

My regal started eating strongly on the third day I had it (today :D ). I will see how well it does over the next couple of weeks. It did come from DD, so that is a pretty good start as they will get it feeding before shipping it. It seems to like meaty foods best like PE mysis and a frozen seafood mixture I made of salmon, scallops and shrimp. I imagine they have a pretty good scent.

My red sea regal is eating well and getting fat. I have him for 6 months I almost euthanized him because it wouldnt eat anything for almost 3 weeks. I tried live brine live blackworm, frozen mysis spectrum pellets. I was depressed and fish looked horrible.

One day I tried fauna marin "health" pellets which it went bonkers for and now it eats pretty much anything including nori spirulina flakes etc

What I am noticing with the regal in my experience that it likes variety. One day it pounces on mysis but other days he couldnt care less...

BTW I did start treating the tank with prazipro the day before I fed the fauna marin which I think may helped with the flukes that he may have had..

looking at him I'm doubting how much my majestic is actually eating since his forehead is getting thinner. He's searching his tank though more. Going to be putting in some Rod's and homemade blend of food w/ garlic. Also trying pellets and nori.

Just my opinion 7 experience. When a new fish doesn't eat, and several 'standard" foods have been offered, it isn't going to eat anything until its ready. Then, when it finally does eat, whatever the food gets credit for a miracle. There's nothing wrong with trying every food you can, but some fish just take forever to eat and some just never do. Making sure a new fish isn't being bullied or intimidated, has great water and a place to hide, and has quiet surroundings help more than constantly introducing new foods. Again, IME & IMO, a new fish will eat about anything recommended for the species if and when he's comfortable enough to do so. Contradicting everything I just said; live brine, or an opened fresh clam can be irresistible-----sometimes.

i got a 4" false personifer last wednesday from LA that havent ate(in QT alone). i've tried a ton of different frozen and dry foods. i'm going to try picking up some oysters on a halfshell later. looks like a healthy specimen, just wont eat.
