Getting rid of Xenia..

Much to my disapproval, about a year ago my wife got a tiny piece of pulsating xenia. Well, the inevitable happened, and it's running all over the place..

What is the best way to get rid of this stuff?

Have all you want, but I don't know how to get it off this rock...

Or should I say.. THESE rocks (plural)

Try not to remove it while its in the tank, any stray particles can become colonies. If you can take the "infected" rocks out and scrub them in a bucket, this method has been effective for me.

Just scrub the colonies off the rock?

Yep, just scrub em off with a hard plastic bristle brush. Rinse the rock real good to get off any particles that could float around your tank. I have a lot of xenia, I throw it all in a nano I have in my kitchen, the stuff grows like weeds for me too.

If you want to be sure and quick, a hand held butane torch spot sanitizes live rock really well. Harbor Fright has them cheap. Allot of times even a toothbrush can't get every piece out of every nook and cranny and it can come back.

to get them off you can sometimes just pull them off. or get a sharp pair of scissors and cut them as close to the rock as possible.(scrub the stump off, or you will have babies. and yes the xenia will be fine after you cut them.

i had about thirty a couple of weeks ago that i removed from my tank and put another little tank. i think they might be fertilizer now. i'll check to see if they still have a pulse(no pun intended)

Why didnt i think of that! i have alot of this macro algae in my tank and i already have the mini torch.

if you still have any left, i would love some! Also, i used to have some back in the day and when i fragged them, i would just get a razor blade and carefully try to get the blade under the "foot" of the coral. I do the same thing with my mini carpets, but it requires alot of patience. But im sure the torch idea will get rid of them too.

are you going to the frag swap on saturday?

I took it to the extreme. Got a tile bit for my dremel and cut it off the rock. Went about 1/8-1/4" deep under the xenia. Then tossed it all in my 29 QT.

When I had them I would take rubble rock from my refugium and place it on top of them, they will grow onto it to be out of the shade and then I pulled them. Trade them in to a store for water, food, anything.

If anyone wants to buy a rather decent sized piece of live rock covered in xenia, hit me up.. rock is a couple lbs, perhaps 5-8? Just a guess.

Xenia free.. just buying the rock. I'll need to replace it

I don't think a rock that size will fit in my nano, but if you have anymore leftover Xenia I'd be happy to get it out of your tank.

So does anyone have any advice on how to get rid of it in the DT. Some of the rock that it is on I can't remove.

The Dremel idea is good I've never thought of that.

As far the the torch, I've done that to pieces that I've removed. But one must be very careful not to breath in the fumes.
