Getting shocked while hands in tank...

I wonder what kind of stress your livestock is experiencing, though you may have found a way to kill all the ich in your tank!

it is a fire hazard

Damn it, thats not what I want to hear!

The gfci or breaker would most likely trip before it caused a fire but....... why risk it. Instead of burning your house down it would leave the tank without power when you are at work or vacation.

I forget the physics law that required fish pumps and heaters to mess up while you are away, but I know it exists.

So, after a $100 new pump I find out its not the pump at all. Its my top off system. When the system turns on its shocking the tank and off it doesnt. Some of you know that my top off is all DIY. So now I get to take it all appart and find any flaws in the design. Weekend project I guess.

No, just keeping my hand in the tank and turning it off and on. Really shocks the hell out of hang nails. Man that hurts!!!

Keep in mind just how many wires lead to your tank--the heater, power heads, pump for skimmer, etc. Any one of them can be the source of the current. I'd have only one plugged in at a time until you find the cause. Make sure to test them all though. The multimeter test will help you determine whether it's really the pump though. Start at the max AC range, then adjust to lower ranges until the digital reading or analog needle starts to give a significant reading. The red probe will be in the water, and the black to a good ground.

Well, I tried.

I'm surprised no-one recomended putting your hands in there and unpluging things one by one. That reply always gets my lit up  BTW: that would be the most wrong thing to do.
