Getting that color??

Ok I used a totally different camera this time. This is as close as I think I cane get to the best pics and colors. In person they are just a bit more blue, th pics make them look just a little more brown then they are. I got my mag back up to 1350 on Elos kit. did it in 2 doses over a few hours. It did go up faster then I wanted it, I think my caps are stressed from it. They look splotchy

Pics still suck only now everything looks brown not bleached and washed out :furious:

looking good! yep, looks like a turaki to me. The hawkins is supposed to be a turaki too even though it is labeled an echinata.

OK, it does look better. Your colours arent that bad. Maybe continue for a few more months and see where this goes?

Yep things have really come along since I started this post. I wish I would have used this camera from the start. Oh and my Superman is red and blue but the pic shows no blue. All blus are white in the pics but it is better that over exposed pics.

The images are much better. Sometimes it takes along time for sps to color up again, they can loose it quickly but take months to turn around. Nice PE on some of the acropora. :-)

dude to be honest i got into the whole vodka dosing, but after a vacation where i weened the tank off of it i noticed that my colors and growth were better than before i started. With heavy skimming and filtration i dont think you need to vodka dose a small tank. Get more fish! and lay off the booze.

...also check out this months coral magazine they have a great article about trace elements which you might find helpful.

keep us posted and gl

Thanks for the input grabthereef. I know how trace elements can impact sps color. I am not to concerned about dosing trace elements. I do have iodine and potassium to dose but I rarely ever do. I use a good salt with higher potassium and do weekly water changes. This pretty much takes care of many minor trace element needs.
Ok so I have been thinking about making a few changes to my system and want so opinions. Since dosing vodka and MB7 my fuge has not been growing any chaeto, only the dam CCA. I am thinking about removing the fuge and sand from the center section of my sump. Upgrading my skimmer from my NW110 to maybe a NWB150, moving skimmer to old fuge section it has more room for a larger skimmer. And maybe making the switch to bio pellets?? If I do this I will move my reactor to the old skimmer section, it has the tank drain in it. What are your thoughts??

If you decide to remove the sand I would strongly advise you to isolate the refugium first. Then remove the sand and rinse the fuge clean before refilling it. If you don't do this you run the risk of stirring up some really bad nasties that are trapped in the sandbed and could do more harm than good.

Just my two cents.

I very much agree with this advice. You may be toxic substances/gases built up within the sand bed that may be fatal for your reef if it all gets into the display. I have read of one or two RC threads where persons have lost livestock due to this issue.

Good luck in any event.

Oh yeah I know. I would shut off my sump and remove all sand and water. Luckily the sand is not that old. I just replaced it trying to kill off CCA.

Well thing in my reef have been ho humming along. Colors where getting better but have kind of stalled out on me. My Red Planet was getting its green back but is now loosing it again. I am also having more algae building up on the glass, dont know if this is from the MB7 or not. I am dosing 1 drop daily and 3 drops of vodka.

Drops ! This isn't zeovit. LOL I've been dosing MB7 and BioFuel since it came out. I dose 10 ml of each per week. Bump up the dose. If you see any cyano, cut back on the vodka.

How much of a w/c do you do ? Weekly monthly ? What percent ?

I am dosing the MB7 as per the directions for my tank its 1 drop daily or 5 mls weekly. I do daily as I feel it supplies a more constant supply of bacteria. 3 drops of vodka is .1ml and is my maintenance dose, I had issues when dosing more vodka. PO4 is 0 and NO#3 is 3-0 ppm. I do 5% weekly water changes or 5 gallons very week.

7 drops do not equal 5 ml. Not unless your using a turkey baster for an eye dropper. :eek1:

The brown algae on the glass is normal while dosing bacteria/carbon.

So bump up the dosing and feed the tank (fish) more. The balance in dosing your tank is, if you need more color, dose more bacteria and lower the carbon source.

Well the MB7 directions for what I got from them anyways is 1 drop daily per 50 gallons or 5mls/1 cap full weekly. Maybe I figured my dose wrong? The directions are kind of hard to understand. I was under the understanding the vodka MB7 stops all algae growth.
