GF always trying to help when they shoudlnt :)

Anyway gf got me a frogspawn while i was at work today and jsut put it in the tank with out even acclimting it, i feel bad cause i knwo she wanted to help so i am not gonna tell her she fu**ed up. ANyway, how much flow do these guys like and how much light?. Have 216 wat T5 over a 55g breeder, where in height should i put it

They like a medium chaotic flow, like to have their tentacles tossed but not blown straight sideways. They can go all the way to the top or the bottom. I'd start at the bottom and move it up.

What you've got is a gal who'd like to share the hobby, which is a good thing. What you've got to do is do an lfs walkthrough with her and talk about requirements and what you want and want to do with the tank...she could be a real keeper, if you can communicate on the tank.

haha yeah , thats the funny thing she hates goin to the lfs with me and then she buys me stuff for the tank all the time and makes fun of it but i guess as long as she keeps buying me stuff for it ill keep her around :). girls are weird. From what i read they are suppose to be pretty hardy so hopfully it will do ok

Aha. Then her gift is only meant to impress you with her thoughtfulness. Good thing it is a tough coral.

Yes I've always found women to be fairly hardy.

We girls are tough critters. We're really finicky on what we like, though. Buy us metal halides, we'll tell you they're too bright and ask for PCs, which we will tell you are too dim. Most of us, though, prefer somewhat lower flow. Otherwise, our hair gets in our eyes. You'll find us in both open brain and closed brain varieties, too.

Make a list of fish/inverts/coral/equipment you'd like for your tank, and "accidentally" leave it somewhere you'll find it. (Unless she's amenable to hints that are like falling anvils, then send her an e-mail.) That way, at least, she'll have a hint of what to get you next time. I do think, however, that she's interested in your tank. Making fun of it may be her way of covering up discomfort over liking something she said she didn't. No girl likes to be wrong. ;)

I just make a wish list and e-mail it to my husband. Of course, he knows not to get things for the tank without me there. Besides, he likes taking me to the fish store and listening to me gush and squeal.

I have never acclimated any my corals or fish since I been in the hobby. Perhaps, one day I might for sps but definitely not LPS.

My GF never bought me any corals either. I would be so glad if she even did it once. Consider yourself one of the lucky one...now I am jealous...:)

fish and shrimp/crabs/inverts should be acclimated, but most coral is either good to drop straight in, or, like i do for sps, just let it sit out for 2-3 minutes, let it slime up, and then pop it in. (this is assuming you have good water params)

remember, a lot (not all) sps are out of water during low tide for hours.

leathers/softies, i acclimate too... also stuff like gorgonians, some of which can't be exposed to air.

I prefer to play it safe and acclimate everything. I see no reason to even risk killing the animal because I didnt take the time to adjust it slowly. Anyway that is just me, plus if I spend money on it I want it to last.

I set the bar with the girlfriend. "Don't buy me anything... please." lol, everyone in my house knows the rules... nothing goes into the tank unless I put it in.
