GFO in a bag?

Anybody use GFO in a bag with good results as opposed to in a reactor?

i dont really have room in my sump for the 2 in 1 BRS reactor without being super cumbersome, and i havent been able to find a smaller one.

i already float a bag of carbon in the sump. would this work for GFO as well or would that be wasting my time.

I used to run GFO passively in a media bag and felt I wasn't getting the most out of the product. What happened to me was the GFO got so clumped together that hardly any water was actually passing through the media. The lack of water flow through the bag combined with the small amount of surface area/contact time with the media really proved to drastically decrease the efficiency, I almost felt like I was wasting it...

But alas, if its your only option it cant hurt thats for sure, better than nothing. If I were you I would look into one of those cheap two little fishes reactor; they are small and can be ran inside the sump or on the outside. I have 2 right now on my new tank and for the price they cant be beat IMO.

hmm... thanks for the input jkf

i had never heard of avast before but that actually looks like a small footprint that could work for me. do you have yours on the floor or inside the water in the sump.

nervous the same way i think i'd be w/ an external skimmer but perhaps i can get over that if i watch it run for a while w/ no leaks.

Not really the most efficient use of the media. There are a number of reactor options out there. Bagged media works as the media in the bag absorbs the water around it. After that I doubt it does very much.

No problem. I have mine external and it does have a small footprint. I got the "you built" and it was really easy.

If you have a big enough skimmer, put it in there, I gave up my reactor and just put it in my bubble king.

That's an intersting idea toothman..how long have you been using this way and does it work similar to a reactor.

From my experience it's definitely a lot more effective in a reactor than a bag.
It's the type of media that requires tumbling to be effective, compared to direct flow.

I currently run mines in a filter sock and it seems to work pretty well. The way I have it set up is that I filled the filter sock with the proper amount of gfo and then into the sump where all the media will be under water. Then I have my return line from my external fuge dump right into the filter sock. That way it keeps the gfo under water while at the same time helping the gfo tumble. Seems to work well for me. I also have a media reactor that I can run it in but I'm too layZ to go to home depot and get fittings for it and set it up. :(
