helllo i have a very bad algae problem :sad2: i am thinkig it is from the bad water sorce(tap) so i have went and bout the spectapure maxcap 90 gpd !! i also have a posban 150 sitting around if i fill it up with gfo it will help remove phosphates? and remove the algae?

Yes GFO will help with excess phosphates and should help with your algae problem. The real problem is using tap water and should be avoided, however I realize things are different for everyone and you can only do what you can do.

Is the water from the machines at the grocery store distilled? Distilled water is decent and shouldn't cause major algae problems compared to tap water. I run GFO in a phosban reactor on my nano and it has eliminated what little algae I had. Assuming your water is ok, I would increase your water changes and run the GFO in your reactor, this should help with your algae problem.

Yes, regular water changes with "good" water (ro/di) and the use of GFO will help lower nutrients over time and eventually help rid your algae problems.
However you must remember theirs many other factors that contribute to algae growth. Life of bulbs, added nutrients (food and waste) and water flow, just to name a few, should be factored into the equation as well.

I'm curious as to how often folks change their GFO. I get the distinct impression it loses its effectiveness within a few days. Could this be true?

It depends greatly on the amount of phosphate in your water column. High PO4 levels could saturate your GFO in a couple of days. Low PO4 levels may allow you to get 3 weeks or more out of it.

The only way to know for sure is to test the effluent of your GFO reactor. When PO4 starts to rise, time to change your GFO.
