Ghetto Rig

Awesome thread! I laughed pretty hard at some of them.

I bought a used 120g with a wet/dry sump. It wasn't well designed, it was noisy, and way to cramped. The tank was already full of water and the doors were way too small to get the sump out. I'm pretty sure that they pretty much built it in.

I had to improvise.

I replaced it with 2 15g rubbermaids in series, with 2 smaller rubbermaids for a skimmer container & a refugium.

What do you guys think? I've actually found it to work pretty well.

this thread is awesome!!!! got some good ideas on a phosban reactor or carbon. my wife may like the idea of me making somethign instead of shelling out mroe $$$$ for stuff. actually she will love it!!!! i may have to hit some of you up on the how do i do it, on those things!!!

nothing is ghetto, if its works, it works, that is how everyone gets better ideas and people improve on others ideas. the more ideas we have i think the better results we see in our hobby. great thread

I haven't tried this but was going to:
Ghetto Algae scraper: 2 magnents each covered in felt, use like a mag-float. I couldn't find the magnents at the time so I spent $10 on one at meijer, but if you're looking to save every penny its worth a shot.

This is one that I did a while back. For some reason, the folks at IceCap thought it'd be cool if they made the function LED on the Voretch so bright that you could see it from the next zipcode. This drove me nuts since I was too lazy to build a stand and too cheap to buy a stand better than an AGA pine to for this tank and all the light was visible. I took a stip of electric tape and covered up all but a sliver of the LED.

Funny. Mine looks identical to that and has been for the past 6-8 months... I wish it would TURN OFF on night mode... it's called NIGHT mode for a reason.

My mangrove bucket has been called ghetto. Just a bucket, bulkhead, and a pump in the sump. Add sand and mangroves and light with the sun.
You can't see my Rubbermaid tote for a sump because of the canvas hung in place with push pins. Is this ghetto enough for this thread?

Your lighting set up is verging on ghetto if I may? Im also looking at that cup thingy hanging off the rim with......mangrove seedlings??

yeah dude I would look into upgrading the lighting. hopefully with the dough you're saving on the ghetto mangrove filtration! :)

The mangrove seedlings were hanging on top of the tank to keep them warm and make it easy to change out water. It is no longer there.
I'm working on upgrading the lighting and putting doors on this DIY stand.
