Gig questions

Planning a massive tank build and would like some Gig advice. Tank will be around 350-360 gallons with Radion or Radion pro's. I am planning on dominant sps with a few select lps and i also really want a Gig, dont know what color yet. Is it feasable to do or too risky to have the nem go on a destructive walkabout. Also what about fish swimming into it and becoming dinner. Should the nem be introducrd and happy before j stock corals so he finds a suitable location?

im sure you will get a lot of replys...
my .02...
neither SPS or the gig will be the first inhabitants...both require the tank to be mature and stable for quite some time....however, your plan of having the gig in the tank before SPS is certainly a solid one...but there's no guarantee that the gig will stay put forever...
you have time, so look thru all the threads and videos and see ow tanks are setup for them...
on my tank, i tried to make the aquascpae in a way that isolated a spot for the gig, it worked to some extent. he moved around a bit, but ended up in the same general area and has been there ow for a while. your best bet on success is to find a gig that is already established and healthy, but that may cost a pretty penny. i got lucky, one of the better reef stroes in NY used to get gigs regularly, and i was able to observe the gig i got in their tanks for 2 months before buying and taking it home..
also, every animal is different, some want/like more light and flow than others...

You will be fine.. Like it was said above, get the tank mature, stable, and find the gig as nice of a spot as you can.

Your luck that the gig isn't much of a wanderer like Mags or BTAs... They generally stay in the area you put them. They get very large, so if you do something like this, which is actually what I'm embarking on, pick a side, or a part of the tank (section of rock work) that suits a gig and dedicate it for it. Should it become settled, happy, not move anywhere you can put stuff somewhat around it but leave it room to grow.

I have three large rock islands or pillars and the left most one is for my purple gig, middle one on the bottom where sand meets is the green gig and the left most pillar doesn't have a gig (yet....!)

Good luck, and read the cipro thread. Don't be afraid to ask questions, there are some very experienced S. Gigantea keeps here.

Gigs don't wonder. For mine, they preferred where sand meets rocks. They usually anchored their foot on beneath a rock, buried the column and showed their tentacles

Many gigs here r often seen just on rocks

What reef store on long island did you find yours in?

not long island, heck no, Manhattan aquariums on the west side onf NYC, 37th and 10th. there are only a few places on LI i know of that get the occasional Gig or Mag and i would not buy from them...

me just few blocks away from ma. very nice place and staff

i would be cautious about certain LI stores' nem livestock...i often cruise through the 2 stores near roosevelt field and i've never seen anemones in their tanks that were healthy. they usually just don't have them in the right conditions. One place changed the tank where they have nems, but, they had crammed several specimens of different species all on top of each other and none of them looked good to me...

Agreed, I was in those stores last week and saw that magnifica you bought. They told me it was half the size it was when it came to the store. Also in the tank were carpets with their mouths open deflated and another one sitting on top of a long tentacle. Thanks for the heads up on where to get a good one locally. I work in Manhattan but haven't been to Manhattan aquariums in a few years. I remember they have really nice stuff but really expensive.

If you're ever in NJ, the Elos aquastudio in Short Hills often has healthy nems. On Rt 22, Ocean Gallery 2 and Pet Shanty also have good nems from time to time. Both can be hit or miss depending on what they get in, but I've seen healthy examples of all the host nem species at both stores.

I know it's a bit of a hike from LI, but people from NY often end up coming through this part of NJ at one point or another.

yup, they r still expensive but with good stuff. thinking about the property price in manhattan--basically just everythins way more expensive here so i just find it acceptable for some random eye candy purchases. darn the citys too expensive. fedex charged my client over 50 bucks for a box due to be delivered to new jersey tomorrow morning.

ai did mix those anemone but the long tentacles look healthy--they have quite a bunch in nice color morph--purple n zebra. i like bb so didn't buy any

you mentioned the stores i was talking about, there's another one near toys r us off glen cove road as well...while i like the quality of their fish quite a bit, i dont like how they store the nems.
MA is good, follow them on Manhattan Reefs, they have sales frequently, but for like a day...so you have to be aware..

Aquarium village seems to be located on what bury road. I barely found there after 40ish minutes drive from my home. But there's a big shopping mall nearby. I'm into ma's dt--they def worked off their butts to maintain that big a system
