GIRS DIY Meeting Ideas

Hey everyone we are planning to have a large DIY meeting in the near future. What we need from all you members is ideas on what you the members would like to build. The more ideas the better and we can vote on the ideas that get the most interest. We've looked over ideas like kalk stirrers, calcium reators, skimmers, mods, ect. Now please remember that when submitting an idea for a skimmer or such we are going to need some form of a blueprint. Also please remember to keep it reasonable on the expense. Although I have no room for a calcium reactor I think it would be fun to build one.

As far as pitching ideas:
Simple stuff.
Everyone always wants maxi-jet prop mod and the don't take long with the kit.

Getting a group together would be a good time to mesh mod anyones needlewheel skimmer if interested. It doesn't take long and we could go ahead and get one of the $28 sheets of PF4 and mod anyones pump that was interested.

Little more complitcated.

The DIY rock. Its not hard to make and it is cheap if it were doing at the begining of the meeting the rock would set enough to move by the end of it. It is cheap enough that we could just give the rock to anyone interested.

A calcium reactor might seem a large project for a single meeting but this one is almost entirely off the shelve PVC parts from Lowe's and goes together with PVC solvents. If some one wants one and wants to pay for parts I would be glad to build it for them.


There are alot of good projects I think this will be a fun meeting.

I agree Covey. Maji-jet mods are a great mod that everyone can use and is fairly inexpensive for what you get. In the past we did a presentation about a calcium reactor and it did not go over very well just because there are a lot of people out there that do not need them or did not know the concept behind them. But that was a long time ago a lot has changed since then.

I also think that if there is someone out there with some acrylic experience to build a sump or something that would be cool. Seems like everyone is looking for that at one point or another.

I do think that it needs to be kept pretty basic because whatever project you decide on will take a lot longer than it should. When we did the MJ Mods in Davenport it took a few hours to do just a few. Explaining and showing how to do stuff takes a lot of time.

FYI, I have bags of cement and crushed oyster shell sitting in my garage from when I was going to make my own rock, but never got around to it I would love to actually use the stuff!

I like the maxijet mod idea too........ and was there one about making a magnetic mount for them?

All those ideas sound good to me. I wouldn't mind a DIY Ca or kalk reactor. And I want to mod my other MJ too.

I like the CA reactor or Kalk reactor idea, or possibly a skimmer.

I would basically like to see something built out of acrylic.

I'd be in for coveys idea. I'd gladly bring my sedra 3500 off my G2 and mod that. I could probably bring the whole skimmer and we could see the difference before and after.

Just an idea. We have a lot of ideas of different stuff we want to see built/made. What if we have a couple things going on at the same time? A few people have already seen the mj mod and some have made the rock so maybe we could break into dif. groups and if someone didn't want to watch the MJ mod going on they could watch the rock being made etc....

Just an idea I had in my simple little mind!
