GIRS Feature Tank

My only concern with Bob's summary is #2. If we allow people to opt in, we may get poor response.

Should we just try it this way and see how many volunteers we get?

If we don't get any we will just pick from the members list and I will go through the process of contacting them to see if they are interested and if not move on to the next one until I get someone that is willing.

Whatever works. I just hope people don't look at their tank and think it's not worth featuring. They may have tried something new or different.

I say take volunteers first then if we don't get any then start picking and choosing.

I'll volunteer once I get my new lights. Hopefully in a couple months.

Agreed! I have yet to see a tank that I don't think should be featured! You might think it's crappy but to someone else it's probably pretty SWEET!

That's why I like the opt out with a 5 page explanation idea! :D

So the decision we have to make here is how we are going to choose the tank....right? We have two idea:

1). Pick from the members list and see if they are interested..if not keep picking.

2). Post a thread and ask for volunteers and chose from those names.

Are there any others? If not, and everything else is ok, I will post a poll and we will do it the democratic way.

You also suggested just trying 2 and reverting to 1 if response is poor. This idea isn't bad.

I would just ask for volunteers and see what happens. If that doesn't work then start asking people.

I like option one because not all members are on RC so they would not have a chance. second who is to make the decision of whos tank is worthy or not? some might look at a tank and say no while others think its the next best thing to sliced bread. on another note one may think there tank is not worthy until they talk to somebody and discuss what it is all about.
I just have a feeling if we don't do the opt out option it will become a popularity contest which then will turn into a ****ing match. If this happens people will in turn get mad and/or hurt and we will start loosing members. this is a subject that needs to be weighed very heavly.:uzi:

Here is my 2 cents. If a member has a tank and is proud of it who is to say if it is worthy or not. The person that has that tank may have worrked hard on it and is proud of it. I say as long as it is clean it has a place to be featured. For example I know a few who have very nice looking sps tanks. I like them but to others my only like softy tanks. I think that if we can figure out a way to randomly select the tank with the approval of the owner it should be featured!

As for not all members are on RC...I will just send out an e-mail with the tread for them to click on to volunteer their tank. I think there are only a few that do not regularly post/check either here or the website (where we will also post the link).

I guess I do not understand this whole opt out thing. We are not going to force anyone into featuring their tank. We can't :). Like I said before...this in no way can turn into a popularity contest no matter which way we decide because it is all random based on the luck of the draw.

I'll explain the opt out vs opt in. It's a financial term. Banks for some features have an opt out or opt in policy depending on the law and what not. We will commonly see much lower percent of accounts included in a program using an opt in policy verses an opt out policy. The idea is that there are some people who will always want in, some people who will always want out, and some that don't care and won't respond either way. Opt out includes those that tend not to volunteer but wouldn't mind being included.

Great idea, but....
lets face it not everyone in the club has a great tank that people would want to display on the GIRS site. There does need to be some form of quality control/ minimal standards for posting. What that would be the group needs to decide.

The opt in allows for some amount of quality control, the opt out doesn't.

My tank is nice, but there are so many nicer tanks out there as well as less attractive tanks.

just my 2cents and of course I wasn't talking about any of your tanks....

I disagree with the "quality control/ minimal standards" I feel that leaves the poor folks out of the running because the don't have metal haloide light and a Deltec skimmer. I am not at all saying my tank is even good but it is what i can afford and not doing bad for as new as I am to saltwater/reef tanks. We need a wide diversity of tans to be the "Featured tank" so potential future members don't look at the site and run to hide because they can't spend $800- $2,000 on lighting, skimmers, huge tanks, calcium reactors, ect.... . we want them to feel welcome and to share knowledge with them. That was why I joined is to gain knowledge not to feel like a low life bacause I have a bare bones system.
Sorry once again my 2 cents worth!!!!!

Where did this thread turn south?

This Featured Tank for GIRS is in NO WAY going to be popularity contest or a contest of who has the most money or best equipment...or for that matter....the nicest tank!!! If you want that just go to the RC Tank of the Month. It really does not matter who's tank it is because once we get all of that persons information, hopefully there will be something that we all can learn from it.

Another thing to not get in a huff about is we have like what 60 members(could be totally wrong). Anyway 12 tanks a year most of the people that want to be featured will get there chance.
This doesn't have to be this complicated. Everyone will get a chance.

I agree with sgarrett1108 and bullets last post. as for this thread turning south I don't think anybody meant for that to happen. I know that was not my inttentions in my post. I think people are just concerned as so I was. I say take the members list and draw a name. once a tank is featured that tank should not be featured for 6+ months to allow other tanks to be posted.
LETS DO IT PEOPLE.

It should be looked at strictly as a profile of a members tank. Im sure we can learn a little something from everyones setup.

I think it would be neat if the featured tank would get its own thread in the forum. It would be a good way for people to talk about the tank a learn.

One question. If a member has more than one tank, how will that work? Maybe the member could volunteer all their tanks and eventually all would get thrown in the mix?

crips people certainly are sensitive. :o

Sorry if my quality control line made folks think this was a popularity contest that was not my intention because after this thread I would lose that ;)

Nor did I mean to imply that he who has the most money should have the most posts. There are great tanks out there that cost "little" to set up (my own is full of used equipment and inexpensive frags)

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!"
"One man's trash is another man's treasure" and all that stuff

My point is that a tank with a single mushroom or damsel should not be the featured tank regardless of how nice an arrangement of live rock there is. Whether its a FOWLR, softie, SPS, anenome or whatever the tank does represent the club on our website.

I thought the purpose of F.T.O.T.M was to share each others saltwater experiences and what we find successful with pretty pictures.

If we are going to learn something from the featured tank of the month, then we should consider posting mature tanks (chose your own definition here) and the owners who have been through the difficulty of maintaining a tank and found a formula that works. That allows the rest of us newbies to learn.

Sorry if my comments turned this post south.

I vote opt in.

SIPE, I don't see any reason for your tank not to be featured, I think it looks great (if it's the one in the pictures anyways).

Maybe I'm just speaking for myself here, but I don't have any expectations for the featured tank to be spectacular. We live in the middle of nowhere and it's a miracle that we even have corals in Iowa. I think it's a good way for club members to get to know each other better. If the featured tank is just a pile of rocks and a few fish who cares. I don't think we should exclude anyone unless they want to be.

(hope that came out right)

Maybe it should be renamed Featured Profile?
