GIRS Website ideas

Uhn not be rude, but what gives? We all pay club dues, why not just pay someone to do our website and host it. That way we dont run into problems like before and it will atleast be up in a timely manner. It seems like a good webpage would be a great way to get more members, if its always down or "under construction" what good is it? If we want this club to be legit and look proffesional wouldnt it be worth it to represent ourselves properly to the world instead of looking for hand outs to do the page?

Sorry to rant here, i had a long day, but it would be nice to atleast see some progress.

2nded. But first step: ditch the "missing proposed deadlines since [11 days or 273 hours or 16384 minutes or 983063 seconds] ago" page layout ;)

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the work everyone is doing, and I definitely am not qualified to do it, but regardless of whether everything is done can't we at least post a main page?

At $20 for membership the club cannot afford to pay to have this professionally done and hosted and still expect to pull in high end speakers each year. I don't know what this would cost but I am sure it would be way more than what we have in the bank now!

Just be patient. I talked to him the other day and he is working on it. He had his brothers wedding last weekend and that took a lot of his time. Sorry for this, but I was not expected to have our old site pulled out from under us like that. If there is anyone else out there that wants to do this please let us know.

I think where running in to the problem of thinking the site needs to be overly fancy.

I would take something the quality of a Myspace blog with up to date info versus a real professional looking site that is never up or up to date.

We payed for the big name speaker but what the point since when we had Paletta the site was down until 3 days before his talk. When I joined the club last fall the only event listed in the event section was a frag action that happen 3 months prior. Timely info is more important than ANY other function of the site. If RC didn't host this forum and we relied on the website this club would be dead.

Is there also any reason we wait until right before big club event like the BBQ or Paletta and then tear down the site. June 25 that site could be down for a month and it wouldn't matter but we seem to wait til right before a time we need the site to gut it.

Just keep it simple and keep it current.

I second that. Simple and up to date. Thats all we need for the most part.

But if it's too simple we hear how the websight sucks.

Right, this was the issue in the beginning. I could get a functional website up by the end of the day(assuming we have a current host and I can get the FTP info), it would not be fancy, but it would be a useable site. When the club first started I made a VERY simple site, it was updated regularly, daily if needed, but everyone wanted a "professional looking" site, from that point on it has always been a struggle. Its one of those darned if you do, darned if you dont situations.

The website is being worked on, but lets keep in mind it is a volunteer job, lets be patient with this.

Simple doesnt mean plain and boring looking. You can put graphics on it and make it look "cool". Just make sure that information the club needs to operate and function are there, easily accessible, and up to date

Features like photo galleries, articles, feature tanks, etc., etc., can come later as they are worked out. They would be very nice, but right now we need a site that has event dates, vendor discount information, members list, etc..

You cant please everyone, but we can have a website that is functional over flashy and Im guessing most all would be happy with that. A simple, proffesional looking website wouldnt be a big task.

The Company I work for paid 5500+ bucks for a website to be rebuilt.

when they got done it was a half-a$$ed POS that anyone with half a brain and FrontPage could have cranked out in a few days .... ( and when it was broght online there were all kinds of typos and correctioins to be made)

this price did not include the Continuaing maintaince and hosting..
this is a reacurring fee. ( that i am not sure of the amount)

so I guess what I am saying is .... if you wanted a deticated staff to work on it ... it is very expensive and then you get a pile of poop in the end .... but that is just the opinion of one guy that is too cheap to pay dues ... :D

( oh I want to say that NO ONE here did my company web site as far as I know ... this was in no way dirrected at anyone here standard disclamer yadda yadda yadda Void in NewHampshire )

Next time your company works on their website, let them know I can put together a half-a$$ed POS for much less, say... $4000. Just throwin that out there ;)

well we have a New Manager that likes to spend money

he is convinced that the more you spend the better something is.
so 'ryansholl' you will want to get MORE than 6k for it ....
that way it is "BETTER"

Right IPinIOWA? I mean the web site was just a small informative thing before done inhouse.

now it is and expensive incorrect and hosted elsware.

I mean given the task of writing the page I could have done it ...

but I am glad they did ... ( this way I have one more thing to ***** about and I like to *****)
