Ok don't get too excited just yet! Here's the deal... I "can" catch my Niger Trigger but my Red Coris Wrasse is a bit faster! So, I went to my LFS yesterday to buy a fish TRAP figuring it would cost me around $20...... W R O N G (Charlie Murphy) it was $50.

Now for the good part! I will give both fish to anyone who loans me a fish trap!

I mainly posted this to be funny, but I am serious if you would like to own these fish!

Do a search on "dyi fish trap" or "help catching fish". Theres plenty of info on these boards that should help. Its helped me catch a couple of unco-operative fish.

I don't feed the fish for a few days. Then when I feed they all come to the surface and focus 100% on food and not the net. Works great for me. I even removed a large valmingi tang this way

Ok, I just got back from The Home Depot (one of my favorite places!) with some parts to craft a fish trap. 12" x 2'1/2" pvc pipe and two end caps. I drilled a bunch of holes in half of the pipe for a water drain and I rigged up one end cap with fishing line for the trap door. Now it's time to W A I T. The wrasse is usually buried in the sand so it's hard telling when he'll come out. The fuel for my truck probably cost more than the fish trap parts but it still beats $50 from my LFS.

umm, I just use a clear plastic peanut jar with small holes in it to let the water through - works great!

Well, I finally caught the wrasse in my diy fish trap. However, I can't get the trigger to swim in it. It's a bit of a tight fit for him I think. On a good note - my LFS gave me $9.00 for the wrasse which I used to get some more crabs. Easy come - easy go!

The best is a 2 liter cola bottle. Cut off the threaded part so there is a hole, about 1 1/2". I use the clear ones. Now cut the top at the shoulder. Put the top upside down into the bottle. it should just be snug. I have a wire tie hanging in the rear, so that a hunk of fish meat can be attached. Dont feed for a few days. Just keep catching, until the one you want goes in. If they are too smart to go in, just take out the funnel end, and feed them in the trap for a few days. They will get used to it. Oh I poke a couple holes and tie mono fishing line to it, so I can pull it out and hang etc.

Thanks Steve - my pvc trap is too small for the trigger so I'll try the 2 liter trap as soon as I get to the store to buy one.
