Just woundering what do you guys use to clean the outside of your aquariums? if your not supposed to use windex..

Well. I do use regular glass cleaner, but I spray it directly on to the paper towel and away from the tank to prevent any drift. If this method is bad, I'd like to hear why? I go over the glass a second time with a dry towel and it looks great!

Ditto

i spray the paper towel in the kitchen then take it out to my tank , i dont spray right at the tank ,

I just dampen a cloth with water, clean glass, then dry with a paper towel. I also have a glass cleaner/polisher branded by coralife that works great also.

the reason most commonly used is that Windex has ammonia, and the ammonia gas can leach through the glass into the tank. For that reason, I use water and a clean towel to buff my outside glass (acrylic) to a nice shine.

Ammonia can "leach" through glass? That's a new one for me! I thought that about the only thing that could go through glass was light and heat.

Windex doesn't leach through glass any more than the glass flows and gets thicker at the bottom with age... or for that matter any more than water leaches through...

I use (and always have) Windex carefully sprayed directly on the glass. Most of the worry is that ammonia released into the air may be sucked up by the exposed H2O. I've personally never had a problem, and I intend to continue the way I do it. I'm not saying its a bad idea to spray the cloth away from the tank, or that vinegar isn't effective (except it may lower your pH...), just what I've done for the past 24 years or so...

Have always used Glass cleaner (windex), sprayed on a soft cloth away from the tank (same with TV, PC monitor).
