Glass cutting

Hey guys I am planning on making a new sump for my 110 reef aquarium. I have everything I need except I have no way of cutting the glass baffles or putting the groves in one of the baffles for the refugium side. Does anybody know a place I can go to get the baffles cut?

Thanks Fellas.

either an Ace hardware, or do a yahoo yellow pages search in your zip code for glass. there are a suprising number of little shops that do it. You can ask them for "shelf-glass", which is a little thicker and I think it is tempered so it doesn't break as easy. Also, I asked my local shop to grind the edges (when I was making glass lids, not baffles) so they were rounded and smooth. you could ask for this on the top edge that is exposed so you don't cut yourself doing maintenance on it. Of course the other 3 edges are better if they are squared for better siliconing.

ACE can cut you the baffles, they won't smooth the edges but I personally woundn't care. I would ask for 1/4 inch glass though. The 1/8 would probably work but the 1/4 just seems that much stronger and I don't think that the cost is that much more.

Cool Guys thanks for the information. Does anybody have any idea what the cost for getting the glass cut would be? I am going to have 4 baffles cut. Also do you guys think a 30 gallon tank will be large enough for a sump for my 110 with an ASM G 3 skimmer in it?

At the ACE I work at on the weekends, we just charge for the glass, not the cutting. I think it's around $4-5 a square foot for the 1/4 inch, but not all ACEs carry the 1/4, I would call first. Also if you can get a large piece of 1/4, it is REALLY easy to cut yourself. You just need a 3 dollar tool.

If you can fit a 40 breeder I'd use that. They make great sumps IMO.
