Glass exploded!!!

Well, I learned my first leason on how to pickup a thousand little piece out of live rock. I was moving some stuff around with those big plastic tongs and I accidentally touch the glass that covers my halides with the tongs and BOOM, it shattered in a split second.

Does anyone know if this is special glass? Can I go to a glass shop and buy a replacement? It gets really hot and I don`t know if regular glass from a glass shop can with stand the heat.

Rookie mistake.

Dan has replacements for some....we had an Aqua Medic fixture, and we did the same a few times, I don't think it was that expensive either. I'd shoot him a Pm/email or phone call first to make sure he has your brand.

It is tempered but it is also UV blocking. If you have a double ended bulb you will damage all your corals if you run the light without the glass. If you have a single ended MH bulb then you can run it without the shield since the outside of the bulb is UV blocking.

It doesn't take much UV light to harm the livestock so if you are running double ended bulbs I would just shut it down till you get a replacement.

Hope that helps,

What I think kevin meant to say was single ended bulbs.

To just support what Kevin said,

If you're using Double Ended bulbs, a special glass UV glass is REQUIRED while running them. If you replace it with regular glass it will shatter.

Single Ended bulbs do not require a glass shield, and can be run without one.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. It is an Aqua Medic fixture with DE bulbs. I turned off the right side for now.

I called Aqua Medic and have a few replacements on their way. I tried Dan, but he didn`t have them is stock.

Thanks again.
