I am trying to build a 20G long sump/refugium. Where do you guys get glass from to make the baffles in the diy sump? I can't seem to find any in my area.

Thanks

go to home depot and get them to cut some acrylic for you in the right measurements and silicon them in.

Capn,
Does this work well? I've heard that acrylic and glass don't hold well together. I've never tried it, just what some have told me.

Acrylic baffles work very well in a glass tank. You don't want to make a tank that holds pressure with a mix of glass and acrylic, but since the baffles don't really have pressure on them they will hold up just fine.

thanks Rendos--I agree

glass option

glass option

I just ordered 4pc of 1/4" glass cut to the dimentions that I need to build my 50 gal sump from my local glass company and they are cutting to my required size and rounding the edges so I don't cut myself(because I will) for less than the price of one piece of acrylic from Lowes and HD.
My 2 cents.

Thanks Capn, I had read that article on WWM a while back (I read that website avidly). I was going to give it a try but I was also having problems finding EPDM stripping that I was sure was good for marine use. I think I'm going to try a boating supply store that is close by and give it a try. It looks good in case you might want a skimmer with a larger footprint, etc, you can easily make a change.

BTW, in a 20G long (12" high), how high should the baffles be. I was thinking 12 x 7 for three of them, and one 12 X 8 with a one inch cutout on the bottom (inverted u-shape) for a bubble trap. Sound OK?

window pane glass 3/16" will work fine. cut 1/16" less than inside dimention of the tank and silicone a 1/4" bead while holding the pane with your hand.
(i use a square and a marker for placement of the glass)
ive build many sumps using it, it has never failed, and once its siliconed on three sides it doesnt break very easy.
i get mine from Lowes or Ace and its dirt cheap!

place the first piece on the bottom and 2" from the rim, siliconed on three sides.
second piece one inch from the bottom and up to the rim, siliconed on two sides.
the third piece, where the return pump was placed was 4" from the rim and siliconed on three sides.

(this was in a 20G long sump with 26.5X's TO rate)

glass shops work fine unless you live in a 1/2 horse town like mine that has one glass shop who think a piece of broken scrap glass is worth 1.5 million dollars and a good piece of glass cut to size is worth 10 million bucks( prices are only slightly exagerated)
