Glass Stress? Crack?

how concerned should i be about this mark? 20 gallon refugium. i just drilled/plumbed/filled today.

it is the line between the two bulkhead holes. didnt appear till water had already been in place .5 an hour beforehand.

I wound not trust that. I'd go a different route. You're asking for a water disaster to happen.

From the picture it looks like a crack...if you run your fingernail across that "crack" and you feel something then I would toss that tank. Only a matter of time before it gives (if it hasn't already!)

On the next tank be careful about how high you drill the holes. I forgot the exact rule but you shouldn't drill within a certain distance of the top and sides depending on the hole size, you'll have to google that answer. I'm sure that applies to how close the holes are as well.

its a crack due to over tightening of bulbheads. its just a matter of time when u will walk in of a busted glass.

First thing that came to mind too was overtightened bulkheads. Tank is prettt much done. Toss it and start over to avoid a disaster.

It could have occurred because of some sort of fatigue loading between the bulk heads as well. Make sure you keep movement to a minimum, maybe use a different material that is less brittle.

Also, not to be too nerdy, but, cracks start from stress concentrations (rough edges, sharp angle changes etc.) so if you smooth out the hole after drilling that may help too.

i didnt drill the sump. this is the refugium. dt flows to refugium flows then flows to sump. 37 to 20 to 20. this was to avoid plumbing a 2nd return pump, but now i am thinking a seperate return and no drilling would be better

I would not trust that tank to hold up. The crack will eventually grow and be full thickness IMO. I'm glad it wasn't the main tank, though, so this one will be easy to replace.

Im also glad this wasnt the main. I bought the main new and had the lfs drill those. This was a craigslist tank, so im not out much just some wounded pride and some elbow grease. I was just doing a trial run, my cabinet wont be ready for some time.

edit: to reply to saleen, I was farther down and spaced in between then the main. I think it wasnt so much over tightening the bulkhead as to possible side strain on the plumbing. I didnt even use a wrench. But whatever it broke, I tore it down. I learned one way not build/plumb a refugium...........................:headwally:
