Glasscages or GreatLakesAquariums

I'm going to getting a slightly larger tank very soon. Going from a 100G acrylic to a 125-150G starphire. I'm going 60" wide because my LED lights are setup for that width and don't want to re-invest in that, but I'm going with some more length, from 18" to 22" and 24" height. I'm also going to glass because of its scratch resistance (yes I know straphire scratches easier, but not anything close to acrylic). Anyways, I don't have the cash for Miracles or Reef Savvy, but do for Glass Cages or Great Lakes Aquariums. Great Lakes has very good tanks I hear, but do not offer too much customization, your basically stuck with standard sizes then accessorize it. Glass Cages on the other hand has quoted me a replica of a miracles tanks, no plastic trim, perimeter euro-bracing (no center brace). Its much more fancy and only couple hundred more in price. I've read of the complaints of GC, but they are all dated. So I'm torn on which manufacturer to go with. GC has a 90 day warranty and GLA has 1 year, but most failures happen much later, so the warranty doesn't matter much. I need some 3rd party opinions. What do you think?

1.) I would recommend GreatLakeAquariums over Glasscages all day, every day, any day.

2.) Have you calculated shipping into your cost, or are you planning to pick the tank up yourself?

3.) Have you contacted Great Lakes Aquarium as far as your particular needs, or just going off of what is listed on their website?

4.) Glass cages gave you a quote on a type of rimless tank that they do not normally manufacture. Considering the 50/50 customer review's of their production tanks i would be very concerned about trusting them to this task.

I don't know if it is typical of GC, but I saw one of their custom tanks in a local LFS. I believe it was 500 gallon with a center overflow. Within a year it flooded the store during the night due to a silicone seal bursting.

FWIW,

Our current 150DD tank 48"36"21" is a Glass Cages custom tank with 3/4" starphire and rimless. Been in it's current operation since May and prior to that 1 year. Easily has passed the 1 year mark as mentioned above.

Any tank can fail at any time and for many reasons. Simply blaming the builder with no basis may be a bit unfair, unless you know more than what you stated in your post?

I have called Glass Cages with questions and always received an answer and have never had an issue with anyone I've spoken too.

Right now my wife and I are deciding on building a bigger tank or adding a second tank to our existing. If we choose to do a larger tank, Glass Cages will certainly be one we contact for our needs; but will get 3 quotes total as we do with most larger purchases of this nature.

From our experience thus far, Glass Cages will get the nod most likely.

I assume you are referring to my post. I have nothing for or against this vendor. I have never ordering anything from them and have no issues pertaining to them. I only know exactly what I said and saw. The only reason I knew who built this tank was that I was admiring the tank prior to it's demise and asked where I could get one. As Glass Cages is local to me, I have heard more about other tanks, but since I did not see them, I am telling you nothing about them.

Wasn't picking at you so much as I was trying to help avoid people misunderstanding your intentions in your post. Nothing more brother.

DSA no longer offers Starphire. Petland Adventures called them for a quote and they said they don't do it anymore due to quality issues with the glass.
