GMX now SSL?

you got it. If you purchased a static IP address from your ISP for an extra $5 - $20 a month, you wouldn't need DynDNS.

Got it...so DynDNS has a fee ($30/yr approx) to be able to keep track of a changing IP address so that you can create hostname for the Apex. Is that right?

Sign up for the DynDNS Pro trial ($20 year), then cancel it. You are left with one free hostname.

I typed too quick. I changed it already!

And for everyone else, in fairness Russ is the one that figured out this problem with Time Warner a couple of months ago. We still don't know why they do this (other than the obvious anti-competitive) but everybody with TW has had issues with GMX.

There are other free DNS services besides Google. Just search for 'public DNS' and you'll find a bunch.

208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 are 2 more good/reliable free/public DNS servers which can be used to get around the Time-Warner/GMX problem.

Note that alternate DNS servers should only be used if there is a specific problem with your ISPs DNS; under most conditions, you should use whatever DNS settings your ISP assigns to your router. For most people, the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" concept should be used.

It appears DynDNS is changing their business model somewhat. You can still get a single hostname free but you have to jump through some hoops to do it. Use to be you could select the free account from their home page but no more. Now you have to actually subscribe, then cancel your trial subscription to 'keep' the one hostname.

If you need more than 1 hostname (like if you also had a web cam) then you have to purchase a subscription for like $20/year.

Such is life - everyone has to make money somehow!
