Gobies

Hi,

I was thinking about getting a neon goby, and I know that generally you should keep only one unless they are a pair, because they fight with members of their own species. Would they also fight with the yellow stripe neon goby, which is in the same genus but different species? Was wondering if I could have 1 of each or if there would be aggression.

Several years ago I kept two neon gobies together in a standard 55 gallon. They were added at the same time but were not a pair. They stayed on opposite sides of the tank most of the time, but when they saw each other there were squabbles. It wasn't serious aggression, but they definately didn't like each other.

I think it would be the same case with a gold stripe and a regular neon goby. Depending on the size of your tank it could still work out.

There will be aggression. I had two neon gobies added at the same time that weren't a pair and one chased the other relentlessly. I had to remove one of them when I finally had the chance. In my experience they are one type of goby that just doesn't tolerate similar fish.
