going skimmerless on sps

have most of you guys that are saying skimmers are better than skimmer-less ever gone skimmer less for a long period of time? i dont think its really creditable to talk if you havnt tried both methods.

I also deffinately agree with you sam, it is the system as a whole, and it takes time, I personaly would go the skimmer route also, but the best sps tank I have ever seen (in person) was on a refugium (skimmer less). thefuture, just experiment, and go with what works best for you.

what you think is cheaper,

cut corners, or getting good equipment?

again thefuture, I learn the hard way, wanted at the beginning to keep colorful corals with mediocre equipment ( flow, lighting, filtration, ect) and pay the price, with brown corals, and or dead ones ect.

since I learned the hard way, with proper equipment, excellent flow, quality lighting, efficient skimmer, and so forth, can keep nice load of fish, and also maintain beautiful colors without losing any,

every time corner are cut, thats where you end up with problems, even if you think you won't used it, its good to have it, even if its just for some time or for emergencies,

Hmm... What if we tried out a few types of exellent and expensive skimmers, then shut them down because we liked the results better?

Would that be cutting corners, or trying to do things the cheap way?

Just curious what you consider excellent skimmers. I want names and models and tank size it's run on :)

IMO,
skimmers have thier advantage and disadvantage. Now, I believe most of you knows what the advantages are so am not going to talk about it.

In our Marine labs we noticed that skimmers romoves what is considered to be "food" for your corals. Phytoplankton, zooplankton, bacteria and detritus were removed by the skimmer. Thats why some """experienced""" hobbiest noticed a better growth after shtting their skimmers off.

However, you need to keep you parameters in check by keeping lighbioload, refiugium, waterchanges or really any other way you like. I used to have a skimmer ( ASM G2) but I turend it off couple of months ago and noticed alot better growth on my corals. am working on a new 120g which is gonna be skimmerless too. plus I like to keep things nice and simple.

for a newbi, I would say go with a skimmer since it will correct lots of your mistakes and make it alot easier for you. I remmber when I got my first anemone years ago when it got sucked and if it was not for the skimmer I would be out of the hobby at that time.

good pts :D

but at the end of the day some people like one thing and others another,

ex. what's the point of two reefer arguing which is better (one fan of BB, the other fan of DSB), it will go on, and on :D

I believe a skimmer is a very important part of a system, and will remove good and bad just like A.G pointed out, what I do to offset that is just feeding the tank what the skimmer takes out along with waste ;)

anyway I respect the opinion of others, if you had success without a skimmer thats great, and to others good luck hope you find success too with which road you choice, there are many paths that lead to victory,

have a good day,

sam

great analysis can you provide some more? how does a tank react after a skimmer is taken off? and about how long after a tank is setup should a newbie take off a skimmer. i have been in this hobby before for about 6 months but i got out because the coralife fixture kept smelling like smoke. now to think about it i should have called them and asked for a replacement instead of getting rid of the whole tank. lol o yeah and by the way what kind of facility do you run?
