Going to Belize!

Just got SCUBA certified and we are spending 6 nights in Belize in Placentcia (staying at the Turtle Inn). Any recommendations for where to go?

i would recommend NOT diving the blue hole.
two reasons-
1. you are newly certified, and don't need to be dumped off on a 400'+ wall/hole.
2. there is really not much to see down there, it is rather barren and boring.

stick with 40-60' deep reefs, you'll see more stuff there...

True for a novice and I agree on the the dive.......but is not the blue hole that is the draw...is the amazing reefs around Long Caye where www.itzalodge.com is....and most dives are in the 20-60 foot area as described.......snorkel off the beach for lobster and conchs....and eat them that night.....

amazing diving.....check out the link...could not get the pic to attach..we are on the north end of long caye......eco resort...make all our own power and water...is way off the beaten path...no discos here...only the most amazing stars you have ever seen at night on the end of the dock, 50 miles from the nearest city...in Lighthouse reef Atoll.

Half moon caye is a kayak paddle off the beach...world heritage site...and booby bird sanctuary...the whole atoll is a place of wonder. When I found it I was amazed, and I have dove pretty much all the dive sites around the world...nothing compares, even the staghorn and elkhorn are thriving...a rare thing in the Caribbean

and I was just sent this......from folks that were there at Itza and Huracan....the yellow dock is where you embark from our island. The fist six minutes are about Long Caye.

dg3147 is going to Placencia......FAR AWAY from the Blue Hole, Lighthouse Atoll and Ambergris Caye........

While I have not been to Placencia (maybe next year), we spent a week on Caye Caulker last year and enjoyed ourselves immensely. We did dive the Blue Hole, not by choice, we where outvoted by the other divers on the boat. It's a "Been there, done that, don't ever need to go back" thing. But being in that specific area gave us the chance to go to Half Moon Caye and also dive "The Aquarium". Both spectacular and that made the day.

Caye Caulker has no cars, only golf carts, bicycles and pedestrians, reasonable hotel rooms and food. Awesome Diving and a 2 hour non stop from Miami.100% recommended.

Very true, is over a two hour boat ride form Placencia or Belize city to get out to lighthouse reef to dive the best sites in the Caribbean The boat ride can be tough, and some days they will not make the trip as it is too rough to get out to Lighthouse reef, which is why Avadon Divers of Placencia stays at the resort www.itzalodge.com as it is just minutes to all the dive sites, and then just minutes back to the dock for a shower and lunch, then off diving again.

Long Caye is like Caye Caulker, in the respect of no cars, but there is also no population as it is a private island. Is truly a cast away experience being at the Itza Resort. The are no power lines or water pipes going to Long caye, as it is an island independent of utilities. All the water is stored rainwater and also made from RO water makers. The power is supplied by the sun and a generator back up for the infrequent days of no sun. It is a very "Green" resort in the middle of paradise!

"The Aquarium" dive site is just off the north tip of Long Caye where the Itza Lodge is, and is a five minute boat ride from the dock.

Check out the dive sites you are talking about here

Makes it real easy to dive multiple sites in one day, without the five hours plus of boat rides back and forth from the mainland, and you get to stay in paradise while you are there!
