Going to Grand Cayman in a week

So, I've got a conference in Grand Cayman, and will have the opportunity to spend a few days diving. Was there long ago and remember loving it, but in the several moves since then I lost my dive book so I can't remember exactly what sites I dove. :eek1:

Anybody have recs for dive sites I should try and visit while I'm there?

Anything on the East End and North Wall is excellent. For a shore dive, behind the Cracked Conch (next to the Turtle Farm) is also an excellent dive.

Have fun :D

Last I was there I went out with Dive Tech (West End) to a dive called Princess Penny's Pinnacle. Other than coral spawning dives, this is one of my most remembered dives. A pinnacle/tower of coral a few yards off the main wall. Descend to 100ft and then slowly wind/circle the pinnacle on the slow ascent. Beautiful.

The East side I dove with Ocean Frontiers, and Bill is right - amazing, wind-swept topography with walls, swim-throughs, etc. Enjoy.

Cheers
Mike

Ocean Frontiers is the operation I dove with on the East End and North Wall. Good company.

IIRC Dive Tech is Bob Soto's company. The outfit bearing his name was sold, but apparently he couldn't stay away from the business and started up Dive Tech as a small shop under his wife's restaurant, the Cracked Conch. I seem to also recall hearing that Dive Tech grew out of that location and has new digs now. They also have a great rep.

You really can't go wrong with any diving in GC! Amazing viz and nice, warm waters. That said, sites along the North Wall are my absolute favorite. Hovering out over the abyss along that wall is awe-inspiring! Also, since I was there last year, they've sunk the USS Kittiwake on the West End of the island. That would definitely be worth a dive to see such a new 'wreck'. I look forward to getting back in the next couple years and diving it.

Take a look at DNS Diving (http://www.divedns.com/) if you're looking for a dive op. They operator a boat to the North Wall and also one on the West End. Their customer service is top notch and they make sure you're well taken care of. Highly recommended!

I'm 95% sure the conference I'm going to has the dive charters all set up, but if they don't I'll look into all the fabulous recs here.

I went there 8 or 9 years ago and I'm now remembering the north wall... I agree, it was absolutely awesome looking down into the deep, deep sea! I'll hit that up again as well!

The downside? I'm leaving in 4 days, diving in 5, and I just now started to get a head cold!!!!! Arrrggh!!!! C'mon, vitamin C drops and Zycam! Work quickly!

So, an update... phenomenal diving. Some of the sites off 7 mile beach seem a bit dead, so the invert/coral viewing wasn't great, but the fish were wonderful. I had an ~18inch queen angel swimming with me for about 10 minutes.

The north wall was wonderful; didn't get all the way over to princess penny's pinnacle, but did a wall dive at the Hepp's Wall site which was very unspoiled and had some phenomenal architecture as well.

6 days, 10 dives, and I'm a happy man :) Next stop: Maui and Molokai diving in December!

Glad to hear you had a good time :) Caymans is my favorite place to go, especially out to the Brac and Little Cayman. Haven't been to Molokai, but Maui is great. Get out to Molokini. The crater is great for fish, sort of like swimming in a big aquarium. The wall on the backside is phenomenal ;)

So jealous! I don't dive but we snorkeled there when we were on a cruise only wish I was dive certified. Well that and had another vacation to go on LOL.

No, no pics :(

I'm such a horrendous photographer, I try and it just ruins the experience because I can't enjoy it while I'm down, and I'm always disappointed in my pics when I come back up!

I am going to grand cayman soon. I am diving with red sail sports. Thy mainly dive the west walls and 2 north wall dives. How is the diving there? How is redsail sports?

Thanks

They have a decent reputation. The West Wall is nice and the North Wall is spectacular.

I would highly suggest diving with "Living the Dream" http://www.livingthedreamdivers.com/

Also don't forget about String Ray City! (not the snorkel spot, there are two spots, this is the original) It was maybe a 12 ft dive but it was awesome! I got great video of the stringrays and we swam with them for about an hour. There is also a Moray Eel that lives around there...

i was there a year ago and did the stingray city tour and 2 coral garden stops like usual and they didnt take us to see the eel. i asked why and was informed that it bit one of the guides so that company wasnt doing that anymore. im off to GC saturday! gone there for years and still havent got the chance to dive.... only snorkel. years ago i did all my class work (in iowa) and didnt get a chance to do an open water dive and the company ended up going out of business and i lost $500. i want to redo it all again but never do when i go there.
