going to Monterey!

The beach a Asilomar is nice for tide pool crusing if you catch the tide low. Passionfish would be great for a couple but IMO, a bit pricey and not likely to be popular with the kids. Go there for a nice romantic dinner or to Fandango, both in Pacific Grove, just up the road from Monterey. A little further past Asilomar is the Fishwife restaurant. Nice variety of seafood and family friendly.

If you are just there for the day, the aquarium will take most of your time. A relaxing break is a free trip to the little natural history museum in Pacific Grove.

If you are able to, the Aquarium does a sailboat tour of the bay. "Science Under Sail" I think it's called, 3 hrs or so with marine biologist on a 65ft boat. Kids need to be 12 or 14 because it's pretty easy to lose one. They put out nets for plankton and show them under a cool digital microscope. I got to steer, it's a cool trip.

Sarah wants to try the underwater explorers at the aquarium too. Wish it was for older than 13! One great thing for families is to become an aquarium member, we even got a break on the price of the whale watching tour!

I'm thinking of heading down there this weekend too.

I like the Fish House on 2114 Del Monte near Casa Verde. Like all nice resteraunts, and bad ones too, it gets very crowded on weekends

2 weeks from now for me :D

Will check out this Fish House you all speak of. Haven't been there as of yet :)

Passed the fish house a couple of times and it didn't appear to be open. Ate at fishermans wharf. Everybody is handing out samples of their chowder like Cosco with a view ;). Ended up going with a little place called Liberty House and had the chowder and half crab special. YUM! The evening whale watching got canceled due to wind. Luckily we were able to get another trip tomorrow morning with another boat. Was ok because we grazed for dinner at the open air tuesday market

Wind will be an issue most evenings around here... morning is by far the best time on the MB.

Just heading back to shore from the best whale watching ever! Saw humpbacks feeding by the boat. Also saw dolphins and a few blues.

haven't seen it yet but they have a Pink Flamingo display now as well as a new reef tank...

Hey Gresham...you work at the Steinhart no??

Why do you think most Aquariums have only one or two tropical reef displays? I noticed this at Monterrey, San Diego, and even to a lesser degree at Waikiki.

I always seem to be disappointed to see tanks full of jellys or big open water fish instead of beautifully colored reef displays. Are "regular" (read non-reefers) just not that interested in seeing tropical stuff? I find it much more intriguing then a tank full of boring silver colored fish in a giant tank. No matter how big the fish are!

Is it just me??

Nope, I work for Reef Nutrition.

many of the ones you mentioned have "local missions" such as MBA and SD so they will always be mainly local livestock. Waikiki is only allowed to keep local corals and there really are not that many in Hawaii. MBA's new one is a "temp" exhibit and will move on in time to make place for another temp display.

Ahh...my mistake then.

I guess the only way I'm going to see what I want to see is by throwing on a tank and flying to the tropics. If I wanted to see local stuff I would just go to the beach!

Edit: Sorry for the hijack. I'm done *****ing and complaining now.

"Car" week begins this week with the Monterey Pre-Historic car races and all the car shows, auctions and such. It will become very crowded as the week progresses.

that's why we went on Tuesday to beat any crowds. I'm having chowder withdrawls now. Got used to being handed samples everywhere lol. Didn't get any cioppino though. Lots of calimari and chowder and fresh crab! Yum. Going to have to win the lottery so I can retire and move to Carmel, lol.

We are going down on Wed morning and plan on a visit to the Aquarium Friday or Saturday. I'm racing at Laguna Seca, but the expanded schedule this year has us on track Thursday and Sunday, so time in between to savor the delights of the Monterey peninsula. It will be crowded though!
