Gold Assessor Basslet

Just purchased a Gold Assessor Basslet from Live Aquaria. They indicate they are reef safe, but indicate to only keep 1 per tank. I had read that they do well in pairs, esp. if they are both female.

I have a 65g tank, and was wondering if anyone out there with a similar sized tank has kept 2 of them without any problems. Right now I only have a clown pair, 3 shrimp, and snails in the tank.

Also...how prone are they to going airborne? Are they any different than the other Basslets?

As of now....they have the Coral Sea ones in stock....which I heard are more colorful than the regular ones.

I have never kept a pair so I cant help there but I can tell you they are very prone to jump. Cover is a must with them, IMO.

Good luck, they are an awesome fish!

They are normally very peaceful, even with each other (as far as I know). I don't believe them to be notorious jumpers either

I added 6 ORA assessors (3 yellow, 3 Randalls) in February (58 gallon tank). Minimal to no aggression between the fish. Most aggression seems consist of a quick dart at the other fish. Most other fish ignore them as well. Not sure exactly how many are left since they do spend a lot of time in the rockwork, but 2 yellows and 1 blue are still around for sure. Great fish, they do jump.

I had 3 yellows and 1 blue in a 65 mixed reef. Also had a mating pair of clowns, tailspot blenny and a goby/shrimp pair.
I lost one of the yellows due to jumping before I added a mesh top. Otherwise they all got along but the 2 yellows resided on the opposite side of the tank from the single blue. Never any aggression and they were comfortable enough to stay out most all of the time. I added a fairy wrasse that was being bullied from my other tank and definately upset the balance. The assesors went into hiding most of the time until I removed the wrasse so I would keep the tankmates as peacefull as possible.
They are completely reef safe in my experience and IMO the wild caught ones are far more colorful than the ora captive bred, and far more expensive too.
I took down the 65 and added them to my 210, they eventually(several years) started to come out more but never to the extent they did while in the peaceful 65

Did you order a wild caught one or one of the ORAs they have? I've been thinking of adding one myself.

I just ordered the wild caught ones....I heard they are more colorful, and are more apt to swim upside down, vs. the ORA ones.

Also... Due to Live Aquaria's compatibility chart and the Basslets not being compatible.....they indicated that if I bought more than one....it would void out the 14 day warranty they offer. I was originally going to order 2 of them.

Thanks for all the info. Kinda mad at myself for not ordering 2 or three of them because I really like them. Didn't want to risk the 14 day warranty from Live Aquaria, since they are listed as incompatible with each other. Just gonna have to buy another on a separate occasion

Right now he is going through the TTM, so it's long way off before he goes into my DT.

I've had 3 for about 4 years now. I see them about 4 times a year. They seem to live way back in the rock work.
