Gold Rim Tang QT

Gold Rim (Nigricans) in 29g QT tub. BM C3.5 skimmer for aeration, sponger filter, powerheads, about 3kg of live rock that I had previously dropped to hypo to kill off anything before I dropped salinity with fish. I lowered salinity to .009 over 3 days. Everything fine eating well. Air Force sends me away for a week...great... I had my wife check the ammonia badge and ammo-lock just in case. The morning before I got back she said it was swimming a bit funny, but righted itself. 2 hours before I get home she checks and says still fine. I get home.. Dead. Any insight would be great. Have never seen any ammonia, ph doesn't go below 7.9. I noticed after I dropped the salinity he liked to park himself in front of the powerhead, did the ich get him before the hypo? Such a shame, these fish are extremely hard to come by in NZ. Not to mention price when they finally reach our shore.

Obviously, impossible to say for sure. Were you (or your wife) ever able to get a good look at him in the tub? To check for Ich (or Velvet) spots/dust? Velvet is a very quick killer and hypo won't treat it. Gill flukes are another possibility.
