Gold Stripe Maroon Clown Babies

WootWoot! I've finally done it! I have not posted until now for fear of jinxing myself. I have pictures to try and post at the end here.

It might not seem like very many, but I have successfully reared 3 gold stripe maroon clown babies up to 41 days old. They are a double miracle as I didn't have any rotifers to speak of the night they hatched. I thought I had 'em, but alas when push came to shove I was online at nearly midnight putting in an overnight order for the next day. These tough-guys really wanted to live! Shew. They are currently enjoying 4 meals a day. I mix it up between live BBS, frozen BBS, frozen Cyclops, and a flake mixture that I pulverized with a mortar and pestle. They are in a 10 gallon tank with about 5 gallons of water. There is a filter, heater, thermometer and a bit of live rock in the tank, but those things are partitioned off so the little ones won't get sucked up or stuck. There is a small hairy mushroom (as substitute for an anemone) and a small turbo snail in the main part - neither of which they have much to do with lol.

Many thanks to all who have posted the volumes and volumes of information in this forum.

My pair have been spawning regularly but due to traveling a bit and not wanting to dump too much babysitting on my helper, I have not scooped any more babies yet. However, Ruby and Reggie have laid a new clutch today so I'll have more munchkins very soon.

And now --- the pix.....

PS -- I'm working on the hair algae. Just today I read thru the big huge write-up in notes from the trenches. I have begun implementation already. Wish me luck!

Welcome to the baby forum!! Congrats on your success. A friend gave me a rock with eggs from his gold stripe maroons and I now have 13 that have made it to a month old. I also have a new pair of gold stripe maroons and hoping they will spawn soon.

Keep us posted with your progress. Hopefully, you too will have a house full of fish!!! :p

Many thanks FB and Barbara :) I've read a lot of posts by both of you and so appreciate the time and effort it takes to share all of your information. Y'all keep up the great work! :)

Nice job:thumbsup:
I like the pictures as well.
I am having to deal with a bit of HA as well, what steps are you going to try?

Many Thanks :)

For the hair algae --
First I am going to reduce the amount of flake I feed. I have been alternating frozen one day and flake the next. I think I'll try two or three frozen and then one flake. I am also going to drain the melt water off of my frozen food prior to feeding. Also in the feeding realm I plan to use a more "targeted" approach and not put quite so much extra in. This will likely mean needing to give a snack in the afternoon sometime, but it will be well worth it if it helps control the algae.

I have already been using an isolation bucket with a cover to try and kill off the existing algae. It has a hang on filter, but I need to pick up a heater to add to it and also start "swishing" and doing frequent water changes on it.

I have several mexican turbo snails which really like to eat the algae, but I think I'll need to pick up a couple more.

I have already given my protein skimmer a thorough cleaning (no soap ;) ) and am also going to try to increase my flow possibly with a powerhead. I have a pretty large regular filter, but it's flow doesn't seem to keep the stuff on the bottom churning around a whole lot. I think I will also mark on my calendar when to switch out the filter bags - I think if they get full of phosphates they will eventually leech back in to the water.

I am hoping that these measures will at least give me better control over the problem. I doubt I will be completely rid of it because most of my corals and creatures are firmly attached to pieces of rock that have algae - so I can't cook 'em ;). But, even a reduction by half will be great!

Wishing you much success with your hair algae reduction :)

I am convinced that God has put me here to accomplish certain things. I am so far behind I don't think I'm ever gonna die.

I REALLY like your quote under your signature! I feel the same way. :)

Great job. Nice looking maroons. We have another maroon clownfish breeder in the house. If this keeps up their going to have to make a special " Maroon Clown Fish Breeders Forum " LOL. Welcome aboard !

hey man, i'm in pittsburgh.....soon i'd like to get another gsm. trouble is, as you know, when they are small they aren't gold so i can't tell at the stores which small ones will have the gold stripe. maybe when you get some raised big enough we can work something out? =)
and good job by the way....hopefully one day i'll get there

ok i'm stupid.....sorry for saying "man", it's late and i wasn't thinking....i don't know if you're a guy or a gal......sorry!!!!!

Bahaha - I'm a gal ;) and no need to be sorry. Depending on which part of Pittsburgh you are in, it's only 'bout a 3 hour drive. Not a big deal - specially if we met half wayish. How big is your current GSM?

I'm not sure how old juvies should be before they should leave the nest (so to speak). Maybe 6 months to private and 12 months to LFS? My son got a pair of juvies once from a LFS that were so tiny and still had white stripes. If I remember right, the guy said they were about 6 months old. We were comfortable with trusting him tho and they eventually turned gold. Advice would be great.

Thanks for the welcome Andy and Bill. :) Looking forward to sharing my next clutch pix!

Bugbdon, How big is the GSM that you have right now? I would be very careful when introducing a new Juv. GSM to a tank with an established resident GSM.

2 1/2"-3" i wouldn't want one until they are probably about an inch in length. i know they are tough to pair and introductions need to be slow and supervised. thegoaliestaxi- thanks and i hope your young'ins grow fast!!

Right-o. Bugbdon - if yours grows slowly and mine grow quickly we might be ok lol. My male was the second gsm added - I looked for a good while to find one that was a good bit smaller than my female. I used a very careful methodical approach to the introduction and the two were able to make a nice bond with very little, if any, damage done to the male. It took a week or two of the male living in a little floating tank. By then if Ruby even looked like she was thinking about coming near him, he was on his side and shaking to pieces in a second. I was very lucky that they took to each other almost right away. It took a little longer for her to let him share the nem - but now they have 3 so if they get on each others nerves there's somewhere else to go lol!

ah good idea.....makes sense. in my 72 gallon i'll have room for another nem. my gsm is just starting to fill in with the gold so i hope it all works out!

Tonight should be hatch night for the new clutch. TootToot!

Here is a pic of the eggs that I took this morning.

Here is another one where you can see a bit of silver peaking back atcha. You can also see Ruby (mama fish) giving me the stink-eye for disturbing her and her brood this morning lol

I've got all my paraphenalia lined up and ready to go. Hopefully will have some fry pix to add tomorrow. Going to try to count the little buggers as I scoop.....my son says -- "Uhhh - Good luck with that mom" hahahahaha ;)
