golden dwarf angelfish... should i get it...?

.....but your aquarium wouldn't be right with an angelfish either......

30 gal is just too small. I just came back from the Philippines where I could see some dwarf angels in their natural habitat. C. nox (midnight or black angel) for example gets huge (5-6"), compared to what you see in the LFS. If you are really craving for an angel, I would go with C. argi (Cherub or pygmy angel), as they stay pretty small.
Oh, before I forget, I haven't heard of a reefsafe C. aurantia ever, they were all nibblers or some sort.

Just my 0.02$

Jens

Holy cow - I didn't even notice the 30g
I agree completely and the fact about their being nibblers has been mentioned but for some reason doesn't appear to have been noticed so it did bear repeating

I haven't observed angels in the wild, but I'd like to second Jens comment above by telling you about a flame angel at my LFS - he's in a 40,000g tank- I adore watching him and have spent enough time doing so to observe that he uses the entire tank. And he appears calmer and more relaxed than my flames. It made me decide that my 100g is, for me, too small for my angels. So when I upgrade, it won't be to have tangs or larger "show" angels - it will be for my Centropyges

I'll stress again also that your golden angel needs a tank full of caverns to hide in.

The best of luck to you with this fish - But f you wind up having to replace him, :( It may be worth mentioning that in addition to being more size appropriate for a 30g, cherubs seem to generally be a little more reef safe than many of the other angels.

Flipteg I'd also like to say that I feel for you - everybody saying you can't do this you can't do that. It's so frustrating - at least it was for me.

Most of us started with a smaller tank like a 30g and upgraded because of the limitations of a tank that size. Whatever the case, just know that everyone with a bigger tank than yours is still having tons of frustration with their own tank's limits. It never stops, but I do think it slows down a liitle around 350-400 g. At least that's what I'm hoping ;)

Sorry to bring up a old thread from the dead but I have a golden angel that's been eating and doing very well in my large tank. No corals for him to nip at but eats pellets, and mysis and flake food. It was given to me from a freind because it was eating all his corrals.

I would like to know if golden angelfish are still captured by cyanide or other destructive methods now or have collections methods changed. I am interested in this fish but do not want to buy if its survivability is slim. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I had one for about 6 months -- in that time I never saw it eat prepared foods, but it was still gaining weight. It picked at the rocks all day long, and loved fleshy LPS. I lost it when a mated pair of skunk clowns (( the most aggressive fish I have ever had )) chased it into their S. haddoni. Needless to say the clowns were sold shortly after.

I would consider one again, but I am pretty much full up with dwarfs at the moment.

had mine for over 3 years now it never ate any offered food until month ago when the first time in 3 years it started to eat pellets and flake since then it has munched on live rock all this time, so i say an established tank with tons of pods and algae life is essential and lots of cover they are very shy fish.

just an update on this. i did bought the fish back then when i first started this thread back in 2006. the fish, who i named Parango, is still with me. i can not believe it has already been almost 6 years since i got him. for the first 1 year i had him, i never saw him eat any prepared foods. i always saw him nipping on the rocks but everytime i put food in to feed the fishes, he just hid and nowhere to be seen! until one day, out of the blue, i saw him take prepared foods. ever since, he has a healthy appetite and eats anything offered.

along with my pair of percula clownfish, this golden angelfish is my favorite fish.

although these pictures were taken back in 2007, the fish still look the same today.

That's one fat golden angel.
I aquired a golden angel from my LFS a month ago. I voilated 2 marine fish keeping sins along the way. First, I bought it even I knew it didn't eat in the LFS. Second, I took my chance by putting it into one of DT's directly without QT.
It hasn't eaten prepared food yet. But it is constantly picking on live rocks or glass. If I insisted on seeing a golden angel eating in LFS, I would probably be waiting for a long time (actually I had). And it wouldn't survive in my QT either because it didn't eat prepare food.
Figures crossed that mine can last as long as yours.

Probably the Potter's angels you had were improperly collected/handled - which is why they died.

It is very very difficult to catch a golden (aurantia) without cyanide -- I have personally decided to put this species on my "leave-in-the-ocean" list because IMO buying them encourages cyanide or some other destructive type of collection Unless my LFS could give me a plausible story about the collection of this fish, I'd pass.

Another option would be to buy the fish and if it dies mysteriously, boycott that store and let them know the reason.

Just my $.02

Also - I almost forgot - they are not reef safe at all!

Hmmm, entirely disagree on the reef safe comment as my pair and four C. Multifasciatus are perfectly fine in my SPS tank. I would be more concerned about collection.

I picked up one from another member on here. very shy fish but is occasionally coming out and does pick at food, though definitely not an aggressive eater.

Another Golden.

Another Golden.

Nice to see a forum on the golden. Here is my beauty I've had for a month now, eats mysis like a pig. Absolutely love her/him.

[I know it is an old post] Golden Dwarf angel is one of my favorite fish! Does anyone know where in Los Angeles that I can find one (or a pair) of this beauty or anyone interested in given them a more permanent home? :lmao:

Thanks. :)

Sorry no idea. A lovely fish that is more prone to hiding than most Centropyge. I have always read about them being "Moderate" risk coral nibblers. Some here make them sound like the infamous C. bicolors & Lemonpeels. Well, I have a Bicolor that I wish would eat mushrooms, which have completely taken over my tank now, even at 60 gallons. Which Centropyge sps is a Corallimorpharian muncher? I need one! LOL

Sincerely,
Matthew
