Golden Pearls, Oyster Eggs, & Cyclop-Eeze

Okay I am currently feeding daily now Cyclop-Eeze, and www.Brineshrimpdirect.com Golden Pearls 5-50 micron size. I was wondering and I am sure others have as well which provides the best nutritional source for SPS.

Basically I am wondering if feeding the Oyster Eggs is worth it if I am already feeding Golden Pearls and Cyclop-Eeze?

Thanks in advance,
Bill:)

The more variety, the better. But are you sure that various SPS can even eat Cyclop-Eeze? Isn't that too large?

I don't know. The frozen are really small to me. But then again I am not an SPS.:D

Do you feed Oyster Eggs? If so what brand? I can only find DT's and they seem a little expensive to me.

Thanks,
Bill

The best way to see if a coral will eat something is to put it in the tank and see if you notice a feeding response. As to the nutritional aspect of the foods, I dont personally know of any good resource for that information other than the actual manufacturer and you run the risk of some marketing pitches included in that info. I personally try to feed a big variety of foods for all my tanks. I figure that even if a food isn't the most complete or a "perfect food" there is still often times something important in there that could be needed. Every food we eat isn't "well balanced" but the idea is that after you have eaten a variety of foods you have achieved a "well balanced diet".

We really have no clue what most corals eat, so the more variety you can provide, the better it is.

fwiw Eric Borneman raved about oyster eggs as a coral food.

You could probably get by without if you find it too expensive though.

Yeah I saw his review. DT uses it to sell their product. Fortunately for Eric I have experience with him and his books otherwise I would tout it as another marketing ploy.

I am going to give them a try along with my Golden Pearls.

Thanks,
Bill

You might want to look into rotifers - there are several frozen brands on the market - I have seen SPS take them, and gorgonians love them

DT does have a larger size oyster eggs than the little container with the high price that you find at LFS. You might need to special order it but it way cheaper per dose. And yes SPS love it. Rotifers work too.

Who has it? I haven't seen it anywhere. I can get the little container for $24.99 locally.

I got mine from my LFS. Its 500 ML in size. Ask your retailer if they can special order. I think they can. Price may vary on retailers desired markup.

The little containers are 30 ML. Mine is 500 ML That is almost 17 times more. I think I paid just north of $100 ( I dont have the receipt handy and its been awhile). 4 times increase for 17 times means a lot cheaper per does and I dont have to be stingy with the oyster eggs. Probably helps the pod growth in the tank too. Shoudl last a year easily. Hope that helps. You can see if DT can direct to someone that stocks in in your area. Their web address is on the side of your container.

Thanks. I just contacted them directly waiting to here back from them.

I have used all of them, and when I feed, I make a cocktail of all of them. Golden pearls I have some that is old and only use it now to mix into a frozen mush that I make. Always found it to take a long time for the golden pearls to go into solution. I have started using reef-roids (aquariumspeciality.com is where I found them) with they oyster eggs and both get a good feeding response from Acropora. The reefroids look a lot like the golden pearls- but go into solution with just a little mixing. My gonipora and gorgonians take it all- including the cyclopeeze.

What are the reefroids made up of?

They look like golden pearls. same color. container says "a blend of naturally occuring marine planktons including a particular species of zooplankton that is unique to our product."
No specifics beyoned that... there is an analysis of protein, fat, etc. they are made by www.polyplab.com might find more information on the website or at least contact info.

I really don't think that any of them actually feed corals. I've tried all three and never noticed a difference. I asked Anthony Calfo the same question and he told me that all three were not food for SPS--all particle sizes are too large. He told me that this was verifiable by observing the SPS polyps under a microscope.
I'm sure that that G.P's & O.E.'s are beneficial nutrients for other organisms in the reef tank but you can end up with the problems that come from adding a lot of rich nutrients to your tank.
I use my G.P.'s to gut feed live brine shrimp and also put a small portion in my fuge for the pods from time to time.

I agree with michaelg. Golden Pearls, no matter which size, were just about impossible to get into solution. As long and hard as I tried, they would invariably float and never make it to the intended destination, my sps.

I do find I get great feeding responses from frozen cyclopeeze and DT's Oyster Eggs.

Definitely not a scientific study, but my observations nevertheless.

From what I understand, sps only eat the 50-100 micron size. i.e. the smallest sized golden pearls they sell.
