Golden Teardrop on Bottom

Do you think there is enough light at the bottom of my 210 (in the sand bed) for a golden teardrop! I have 3- 400Watt Metal Halides on there!

I know some manufacturerswill have diiferant par values, even though they are the same K values. I have read that the gold maxima's don't need as much light as the brighter colored ones, I would still say that you have more then enough. You would even be better off if you had a lower K bulb like a 10k or 14k in the mix. You should be good.

The reason i am asking is because it looks like i can see through the bottom of him and he is not opening! I need help I have only ever had 3 clams! Eel ate my last 2~

What do you mean by see through the bottom of him? Like where the incurrent sipion is there is a hole and you can see substrate or glass? This woud not be a good sign, although I don't think lighting would be a contributor to this. I lost a clam that had a hole in the bottom in the area right before the bysill gland. Where the hinge in the shell would be. That kinda what you mean?

Yeah exactly, i moved him last night and made sure everything looked good and it did! Now this morning he is not opening and i can see thorugh him!

that normal all clams have this, its part of the byssal opening

where did you move it? closer to the light? how close?

also 20k is out of the ideal spectrum for clams. the come from the reeftop and do best with full spectrum lighting

6500k to 10k is what clams have adapted to. people keep them with 14 and 20k also but some time they have problems. if your clam was fine befor you moved it and you put it right back in the same spot then just give it some time

I was talking about the connective tissue between the two sides of the shell. Not actully part of the byssal gland but the stuff that runs along the long edge of the shell had gotten a hole in it and you could see the substrate. Bristle worms had gotten in there thorugh the opening.....I have mine under 14k Hamiltons with 220 watts of VHO 1x03 and 1x50/50, but my tank is no where as deep as yours. I think you will be ok just let it get adjusted again... According to D.Knop the more drab Maximas or less colorfull clams usually come from deeper water but, he also say's that once a clam becomes acustom to a certain spectrum of light that it is less likely to be able to adjust to new lighting.....That info was from part of his articles in Coral magazine.
