Goldflake Angel in a reef tank

Just wanted to get some more last minute opinions before I purchase it and place it in a 120g reef tank. Thanks, really appreciate it!!! Ron

What kind of corals do you keep? I would suspect the GF will be fine with leathers, shrooms, polyps and the like and more of a risk with LPS, clams, xenia. SPS is another story and I have heard of some who will munch it and others wont, like any angel it is a risk but that is one of those fish that people are willing to take risks with. Good luck.

It is funny with angels as usually RS Regals are pretty reef safe, but there are exceptions. A guy around here is trying to catch his regal so I can buy him. Ate about $1,000 in corals. But that is usually the rare exception. With any angel just make sure you are ready to remove it just in case. I've seen more issues with LPS for most angels.

Goldflakes are also generally reef safe, although mine is not SPS safe.

Thanks. I am getting a 3.5" GF. I don't have any xenias, but do have a mix of pollyps, shrooms, leather corals, montis, acros, porites, 2 small clams (which are probably goners), torches, and candy corals.

Large Angel - thanks for referring rarefish.com. From what they tell me they actually do treat the GF's for all types of parites, including flukes. The one I am getting they have had for some time and has been treated with copper and fromaldihyde.

Most Goldflakes dont need to be treated with copper and formaldihyde. Even as a quarantine procedure it seems quite intense. I suppose it depends on the state it is recieved in. The origin is mostly Xmas island, and its not uncommon for the fish to come in with flukes or Ich. I have one now that just came in, and I have not treated it with anything and it seems fine. Rarefish.com is a great source for fish and thier experience and quality seems reliable nontheless.

Well, I can tell you that out of the three goldflakes 2 came in covered in flukes. First one came directly from a wholesaler in Hawaii and died from the flukes (heavy infestation on the eyes and it was the only fish in quarentine), before I knew about these nasty little creatures, second one came in w/flukes, but luckily I knew about it. Third one was from a guy around here who has had his for years and no sign of flukes. I'm sure the first one would have made it if I had treated for flukes.

Cupramine is an extremely affective copper treatment even for species especially sensitive to copper. From all the nasty parasites I have had and the impact or potential impact on the rest of my fish I treat all fish for flukes (Prazipro) and then treat with Cupramine. I have not lost one fish due to the Cupramine treatment, even multicolor and coloni angels. Some may not agree with this but I feel that the impact of Cupramine is much less stressfull than an attack of ich or velvet.

Red Sea Regals can be fine and then they can go crazy eating everything in your tank. I have seen this several times before. Any angel is problematical in a reef tank, even centropyge species; they can be fine for a while, but then something happens. I have a multicolor in my SPS tank. So far, so good, but one never knows.

Large Angels, I think quarantine of all fish is essential and treatment becomes much easier if you do so. Your process is superb.

Is Prazipro what you use to treat for flukes? Would you reccomend? I have a goldflake now, and I am quite paranoid after the last few posts. I QT in Melafix, then Ferazone. If the fish has no visable signs of flukes, ich, etc, then I put him in my main holding facility.

May I ask what yall feed your GF's?

Only time someone can actually for sure tell that a fish has flukes by looking at them is when the flukes start to cover the eyes. Then you can really see these guys. Another way is to do a 2-5 minute FW dip in a clear container. After the dip inspect the water very carefully. If there was flukes on the fish you will see these almost clear yelly like globs in the water. I personally don't know if Melafix or Ferazone does anything against flukes.

I used fluke tabs at first but after someone here tried Prazipro with real good success I changed to Prazipro cause it is less harsh to the fish and biological filter than fluke tabs. I now don't put a single fish into any of my tanks until it has been treated with Prazipro.

Also keep in mind that even though a fish may not show signs it can still harbor the parasite. I had a situation a few years back in which I had a tank with velvet. I couldn't do anything about it due to work travel and what I found was that my burgees buttfly. and emperor angel were always covered (no worse, no better) and my pair of GSM clowns, blueface angel and a couple of other fish NEVER showed any signs of velvet. The butterfly and emperor were pretty tough and continued to eat and I was out of Cupramine so I let it go a little longer (which I don't recommend) to see the affect. No change. I then added Cupramine and it cleared up the fish. But the others never showed any signs. Some fish have or build up an immunity to certain parasites. So lets say this was the case from a store. They ship those fish out that didn't show any signs. You watch them for a week or two and think they are clean. Then you put those fish into your main display and a week later all your fish are covered. You just can't always tell.

Got the fish with some complications (LargeAngels - you got mail). Looks OK but one eye has a white spot - not in the center, but on the top - so I am keeping a close look. Otherwise it's clean. The seller tells me it was treated with Fromalyn and copper making sure parasites are dead.

I've treated my fish with prazipro for skin flukes and this stuff works great. I treated my blueface first in a hospital tank with prazipro and he healed great. I noticed he had something in the corner of his eye wasn't sure what it was so I watched him closely for a couple of days. Whatever it was diappeared but the BF eye started to turn cloudy and swollen, he also would shake his head as if trying to throw something off, this is when I treated him and hoped for the best.. The goldflake I notice a week aso after arrival having this same eye problem, this led me to treat the whole tank with prazipro. That was last mth so far everythings fine.

My goldflake came in from the wholesaler with flukes. Dipping him in freshwater seemed to do the trick. As for Regals, I have one in my 110. He eats well and has incredible colors, but that is the exception. I can't count the Regals that have died of starvation. They are very shy in the wild and should normally be avoided. The exception would be those who have kept many angels and have the tools to get them to eat.

if your lfs doesn't have it, live aquaria carries it. If you want more info on it go to hikariusa.com. And thanks large Angel about the product tip. Now awaiting my chrysurus angel anybody have any expertise with these?

I recieved my chrysurus from live aquaria today, very nice. It's about 2 1/2 inches and look like a juvi koran but close inspection and comparing pictures of the juvi koran with the juvi chrysurus I determined it was the right fish. My problem is they charged me $229 dollars, this should have been for a small adult or at least one with the tail turning yellow. Mine is definantly a juvi the tail is soft blue with white. I question them about this because juvi cost $129. I was told to watch it a couple of days, that due to shipping stress its color had changed and when it settle in the tail would look more yellow, is this true?

No. It doesn't sound right. Besides that they state that a 2 1/2" is a small juvenile. They charged you for a large juvenile, according to their measurement standards.
