Hi there,
Have been having some problems with our Goldflake Angel.
We have had this fellow for about two years now,it was doing great eating well, swimming around doing just fine....:-)
Then last week it stopped eating completey, swims only in the back doesn't come out to often...
Everything else is doing good in our tank even our Clowns have layed eggs, things are going well, just have know idea whats going on with our Goldflake, has someone had this problem with these guys, or has any idea what the trouble could be,that would be great to give me some help on this ...
Thanks

Unfortunately I have encountered this with my goldflake as well. I had him for about a year and was a total pig, very active, and got along with all the other fish in the tank.

I noticed once week that he stopped coming to the surface for food (which he was always one of the first in line) and then just stayed in one place in the back of the tank.

I put him in my QT and he looked better, but just withered away within 2 weeks.

He had been through a couple rounds of Prazi, copper, hypo and some other medications so I know he was very healthy. Sometimes there is nothing we can do.

I hope yours makes a turnaround.

There was another post exactly like yours a few weeks back. The poster was having an issue with a goldflake after a year and a half or so. I believe someone else chimed in having a similiar issue.

I will attempt to find it and give you the link.

About two months or so ago, my goldflake (which always ate prepared foods since I got him) seemed to be totally disinterested in any food I put in the tank. To this day, I still don't see him eat anything I put in the tank, but he doesn't seem to have lost any weight. I think he is getting enough food naturally in the tank from the live rock that he doesn't require anything else, but it was odd the way he seemed to stop eating the food I put in.

Goldflake Angel..

Goldflake Angel..

Thanks for the response,
Got home here, checked on my Goldflake,he must be hiding in a area where I cann't see him..
Really upset about this ,he was always doing so good, the biggest fish in the tank always the first to want to eat...
Just cann't figure this out, nothing new has been added or done ,did a good water change hoping this would help, bought some clams to give that a try no luck, I think this fellow is on his way out I guess,,,
When you have a fish this long with know troubles it's a little upsetting...:-(

I was one of the posters that chimed in on the other thread regarding issues with my Goldflake. I had mine for over a year and he initially went through QT with Prazi, copper, hypo for 8 weeks. When added to the display, the fish was very active and healthy looking. About three weeks ago I noticed its appetite had diminished and it started having stringy white feces. This is usually indicative of internal parasites. The fish started to lose its color and was not as active. I pulled the fish and it is in a QT being treated with prazi and copper again. It still appears it is slowly withering away. I hope it will pull through, but I am starting to doubt it.

I think prazi is best used for flukes. I would try using another med to treat for internal parasites also. I think this is the cause. These fish are eating in the beginning (might be too late now, but for the future) so instead of relying on the prazi to deal with internal parasites I would make a medicated food. You could make a medicated food with metro or nitrofurazone.

Brian--I just came across this thread and hoping you can update on how your Goldflake is doing. Given that another month have gone by and if your GF still hasn't lost any weight than that would be a very good indication it's grazing from the rocks to sustain life.

Orca Lady & jnc914--how's your GF doing?

I've read so many bad things lately that I'm getting nervous with my new addition. :(

For folks that had problem with your GF not eating all of a sudden after having them for a year or more, what temperature was the GF in? Just curious if temperature was a factor here.

Thanks,

Kevin

No help here, but I have had good luck with the NLS Thera-A for my large angels to keep the "stringy whites" away. All my fish eat them, so it is a win-win.

I keep my fish at 75-76.

Seems to be a trend with Goldflakes to up and "quit" one day.

Maybe someone needs to start documenting the occurences. ;)

Praziquantel is an ideal dewormer. In fact, thats it primary purpose. Whereas metronidazole is an antiprotozoal in general. Regradless, if maintained in proper dosages, it can work internally. Remember, fish DO drink water.

Kevin-
Unfortunately mine passed during the Prazi treatment in a separate QT/hospital tank. Mind you that this fish had gone through extensive initial QT with Prazi and Cupramine when it first arrived from a HI wholesaler, and then I dosed the display with Prazi every 3-4 months as a precaution. The fish had been doing so well and then within a month started to go down hill rapidly. I mentioned in a different thread that the 2.5" sub adult GF that Serdar from Phishy sent me two years ago was by far the healthiest specimen I had ever come across. Unfortunately velvet caused his demise; still miss that fish. I think I am calling it quits with the GFs. BTW my tank is around 72-73 due t o the Bandits in the tank. When did you add a GF to your system?

Jason,
Sorry to hear about your GF. I got mine on 10/9 and been in QT since with 2 rounds of Prazi and now on the third round. Within a couple of days in QT he appeared to be swimming strange and spent most of the time facing a outside window and just holds there. He wouldn't eat for close to 3 weeks and had white stringy poop. So I'm giving him a third round as a precaution before putting him into the DT tomorrow. He's very picky and for the past 10 days or so he eats small amount of flake, pellet and frozen mysis but spits out other frozen food. Honestly, I didn't think he was going to make it to this point the way he was swimming. I'll have to slowly acclimate this GF because the QT temp is 76 and my DT is set bet 69-71. This may come back to bite me but given how sensitive this fish is I skipped copper treatment.

Kevin,

Didn't you lose a Blue Line angel lately to some type of bulge that formed on his side? I think I have heard of other BL getting the same thing. I wonder was is going on with the fish in the Chaedontoplus complex lately?

I am in process of getting a 240 and 200 gallon tank ready and planned to have a few of these species since they are my favorite. Makes me nervous hereing all this.

Sorry to everyone for their losses, hopefully something can be figured out.

Dave

Dave,

Yes, recently I lost a 7" BL that I'd since May and it was eating till the last week. The bulge was always there but more apparent toward the end when the stomach was pinched. I'd one similar a year ago but that one took 7.5 weeks to eat and dropped much quicker.

I didn't correlate the BL with the GF as I didn't see anyone mentioning a bulge in their GF.

Kevin

Did you QT the blueline for anything internal and if so what? Sorry its not on topic and that you have a thread, but I don't know where its at now.

The 7" BL went through 2 rounds of Prazi and 4 weeks of Cupramine. The recent baby BL (3.5") went through 2 rounds of Prazi and no copper. I lost a 4.5" BL in QT (after 2 rounds of Prazi but didn't handle Prazi well and was contantly laboring breathing) prior to getting the 3.5".

This is why I think there have to be better ways to treat for internal parasites. Something caused that bulge that wasn't affected by the prazi.
