Goldrim /white cheek tang - long term success

So I'm reading that survival is not very good. Most online sellers list this fishes care level as "intermediate" - but some write-ups say to avoid this tang like the plague - it only lives a month or so. How can both be right?

not sure what the truth is....

One fish store near LA had a gold rim tang for 6+ months until it got sold. It's the only track record I'm aware of.

thanks for the info coralsaddiction. isn't it interesting that nobody is responding. if had had posted about a yellow/powder blue/hippo etc, I'd get tons of responses.

why such little info? could be that few have seen the post.

I put them in the same category as Achilles and Powder Blues, get them healthy and eating and you are good to go. Easier said then done.

It could be that. There is also a possibility that not too many have had long term success with it. Some tend to go for a similar looking powder brown tang instead due to lower price and wider availability. I remember Bob Fenner writing on wetwebmedia that Powder Browns were more hardy than Gold Rims. That could be a factor too for those doing their research ahead of time and getting swayed by his advice.

I really like the velvety chocolate brown contrast against the gold . Most Powder Browns I've seen are a faded coffee/grey-color and look half-dead. They always look sickly at every FS I've been to...those and Foxfaces are always limping along.

I have a source to get a goldrim for 45.00 - which to me, seems like a pretty fair deal. It's worth a risk unlike a 250.00 achilles.

So I'm learning but for 45.00 I may give it a try.

I kept one in the past for a short amount of time. It was beautiful, but super aggressive (typical of those acanthurus tangs I suppose). I ended up selling it back to the pet store after a couple of months because it just wasn't worth the stress it was inducing on my other fish. Over the course of those 2 months, it was also picky about its diet. Despite the wide diet I offered (formula one, formula two, spirulina, mysis, cyclopeeze, nori, and something else I don't remember), it only fed on the nori and picked at the rocks.

Would I keep one again? No.

Great information. Confirming to me that it's not really an "intermediate" fish at all.

I know what to expect and not to get discouraged if he doesn't anything but nori.

Did you quarantine him?
Did his colors fade at all?
Or did he lose weight?

I actually had two and want another one.. Someone posted up front about a healthy specimen, and out of all the fish I have had, the white cheek, tusks, and goatfish are definitely ones that I have had to be strict with that rule.

With the white cheek, the main thing is vitamin fortify whatever you feed him up front.. It will only nibble from that I have found at first, and yes, nori will attract them like crazy.. If you fortify the nori with say, selcon, with them especially, they plump up, become comfortable, and respond much faster.. For me it only took two weeks with my last one.

Also the size. Somewhat like tusks, if you can get one that is 3 to 4 inches long at least, they work much better than the babies.. Other than that, typical tang parameters. But they do love tons of flow..

Best of luck!

I have one in my tank for the last 6 years. He has been a model citizen, although the only other tang in the 150 gal is a Kole.

I purchased him from LADD, QTed for 6 weeks after receiving him and he has been a great fish for me ever since. I absolutely love this fish. There is just an understated beauty about the simple color scheme. Hope this helps.

Totally agree and not everybody has one.

Another great tip, thanks.

I'm pretty set on giving one a try and thanks one and all for the help!!!!!!

I help break down a tank not long ago for a guy who lived in the middle of no where. He had set the tank up 9 yrs before. He pretty much set it up, did maintenance on it the first year and then never touched it again.
At one point the tank had been fully stocked and included a white cheek. After 8 yrs of neglect only 2 fish remained in the tank. A clown and that white cheek, plus a ton of rainbow nems that where severally starved for light.
That white cheek was one of the most beautiful fish I have seen and I will be including one in my upcoming build as a result

Had one for many years in the 90's. I prefer the Achilles, and the two don't mix well. Care is as Achilles. Needs QT and plenty of early coaxing to feed; quite enduring once acclimatized.

My local dealer has had one for a couple of weeks, if it survives the two weeks and is still available I'll give it a try. Beautiful fish in my opinion. This thread was really helpful.

I had one for 3 to 4 months before my former clowns beat it to death....

if you fortify the food and feed heavily in quarantine, a very hardy fish. just make sure you buy a healthy specimen to start with (standard fare)

I have one in QT right now, I've had it a little over 3 weeks. It is very bold and already will eat from my hand. Eating Hikari mysis, LRS, green nori with gusto. Rapidly becoming one of my favorite fish.
