Goniopora question/mild pannic attack

I've got two gonioporas. A pink with yellow center and a crazy nuclear/neon green. The green one is the one in question. Everything in the tank seems to be doing great, but I haven't seen the green one open up in 4-5 days or so. It's been doing great in the tank for over a month. The last time I remember seeing it was right before water change and I had just feed both the goni's some goniopower. I'm currently on a roadtrip so I don't have the exact parameters of everything, but after the water change in question everything was normal. The only that had changed at all was the alk was down to 9dkh from 11dkh, and the nitrates were at 0.2ppm, which is the highest it had been in a long time. We just did a big water change (about 20%) right before we left yesterday evening. Did a water test before we left and everything was still normal, mag 1440ppm, nitrates 0ppm, Phosphates 0ppm, calcium 500, ph 8.4. (Sorry trying to remember all the parameters off the top of my head without being home) I know my star polyps went dormant for about 2 weeks for no reason and then came back pretty well, could this be a similar situation or am I going to loose the goni?

here the green goni is almost center, to the right of the candy canes, left of the zoas

here's a pretty bad picture of them from the top when they were open

angry from the snail... they used to extend about 1/2" or so

and the pink ones for comparison

gonies are very fragile sometimes it seems like they die for no reason what so ever. I would place it on the bottom if it was me and see if it does better

Moved it down into the sand. When I got back in town 2 of the polyps were completely gone and just the skeleton was left. Today when I got home from work it looked like a couple of the polyps were trying to come out.

Ok, back with a similar problem again. After I moved the green ones down they came back and were happy. Then a damn snail moved it into the frogspawn and that was the end of that. BUt my pink with yellow centers have been closed up now for probably 2 weeks. There color is all still there so I don't think they are dead yet. I moved them down into the sand and no change. It seemed to have happened after I fed them gonipower. Are they every going to come back out? is there anything i can do? I gave them a coral revive bath yesterday

Gonis don't just die for no reason. Usually they go because of a lack of nutrients.

In the case of the OP, it sounds like there is some issue with the water parameters, as there are other corals that are also unhappy.

I would recommend rechecking the water params, and doing a WC (large if possible) to be on the safe side. I would also recommend dosing iron, as I've read many times that this helps with the recovery of gonis. I dose kent Fe & Mn.

try to put them in an area where there is good flow. this may entice the polyps to open up again. I wouldn't worry to much about feeding it - I rarely feed my goni's anymore.

they actually thrive better in a "dirtier" environment.

I have 2 gonis, ones a large encrusting pink and ones a small, bright pink with blue eyes "ball" type. They both seem to like just less then moderate flow and light. They have both been temperamental at times, but they seem to like coral frenzy with Selcon 2-3 times a week . I think they like the Selcon fatty acids. The more I ignore them at this point, the better they do. They open up all day and are gorgeous, but I freak out if they close, which they will do from time to time. I think they just need a break sometimes.

Well as of today they are both dead :( it's the weirdest thing, they were happy into I fed them goniopower, they closed up and never opened back up, they were both in medium flow and medium light

I have my goni in a low light & lower flow are of the tank. There is flow & it is moving slightly but not being blown around. I just heard that they don't like temperature fluctuations too.

I wasn't planning on getting one but figured I would try. I was told that they aren't as light dependent but need nutrients. I add Selcon to either frozen or flakes for the fish on a daily basis. The corals really seem to like it. I have to say for now mine is looking really nice but it's only been in the tank 5 weeks.

Glad to be a new Goni keeper. I bought a canary yellow one about the size of a tennis ball about a week ago. Stunning is my description! My question is after feeding with Coral frenzy some of the polyps close up rapidly and then reopen with a bottle shape. They are expanded at the bottom with the tips pinched shut. Is this a feeding response? It almost looks like they are "holding" their breath. I know...silly description, but that's how they look. Anyone?

I am sorry to hear your guys died. I have to admit I am unfamiliar with Goniopower but your post caught my attention. I am new to Gonies so I am extra cautious with doing the correct thing myself. I will be looking for experiences from other people using Goniopower.

Gonipower was developed by Justin Credabel and a great food for all filter feeders especially gonipora IMO. I have 2 gonis from Justin, 1 from ORA, 1 from a local, and one maricultured. The aqua cultured Goni are doing great for me and have had over a year now. The maricultured ones have been destined to dye and feel there is nothing we can do with those. Look for aqua cultured, JMO.

Tweaked, thanks for the fast response. Much appreciated.
