goniopora

Can anyone give me a website about the care, keeping, feeding of goniopora?

I have some questions. I have been to goniopora.org and am looking for something else. It's a good website, but need more help than I can find there.

John Kelly is one of the experts on Gonipora. I would think that he could answer any question you would have. He is on this website quit frequently.

Regards,

Pat

I have a red one in my 120 with same lights and 2 Tunze 6100 power heads. If u have a sand bed, you might want to stir it every so often around it cause they like dirty water which of course is the opposite of the sps. Also pickup some Reef-Roids for food.

My gonis...I have two....have been with me for over 5 years. I have intensive skimming, 30,000gph flow, 400 watts UV, 1000mg/hr ozone, 6800 watts of light, and I never target feed or add a single additives. This guy (sorry...not a great pic) stated out at the size of a small golfball....he (or I should say she since she drops babies) is now over 18" in diameter when fully expanded. She is located about 10" directly below a 400 watt 20K MH. I've never been a believer of the dirty water thing....there are just too many very long term success stories....just in my area alone....of goni success in low nutrient sps tanks.

Here's thread of another local reefer to me who seems to be doing well with gonis in an sps reef....although it isn't considered long term yet.....but, he does have a pic of one of my babies.

There are several reefers local to me with long term goni success stories that never post or even visit a message board. So...YES....there are gonis in sps reef success stories out there.

I need to know: Can goniopora survive in a tank that is geared for sps, 2 250 metal halides and lots, lots of flow?
Kay

Yes, it can survive and thrive.
What color is the Goni that you want?

Unless your tank is very large (like Steve W's), then I would focus on placing the coral in an area where you can easily access it for feeding.

Having "lots of flow" is a relative description. You could have 1,000 gph flowing through the tank, but still have an area where 50gph would flow across the coral...or even create an area. Getting it acclimated under high water flow can be difficult, depending on its health, and it makes it much more difficult to feed unless you turn off the circulation pumps. Their polyps and tentacles tend to remain more retracted in the area of direct flow, which can also make it more difficult to feed them. Goniopora have a natural "waving" pattern that I'm sure is affected by higher flow too. I know of people who keep them in higher water flow, but I can't think of a good reason to purposely place them there. Mine tend to grow more on the side of the coral that receives the lesser amount of flow.

The water flow rate may also effect how well the different Goniopora species protect their zooxanthellae from harmful lighting. Most of the species have either green, purple, pink, or white colored tentacle tips, which I think must act as UV blockers for the zooxanthellae concentrated around the base of the tentacles and in the polyps. If the polyps are being blown sideways, then the zooxanthellae are being directly exposed to whatever lighting you have.

The purple Goniopora species, and several of the red colored species, seem to be able to withstand somewhat higher amounts of light than the common "Green" species. If you are using 2 x 250w metal halides, I would keep the coral at least 2ft away from the bulb centers if you are using 10k. I have used 10k for the past 16 months and am currently doing an experiment to compare the effects of 14k bulbs on the different species that I have. So far it appears that a blue'er spectrum may be better to use, but higher Kelvin bulbs generally do not give off as much PAR as lower Kelvin bulbs do either.

How long have you had it there?
Is this the same one that is at the bottom of your tank in the photos on your web site?

I've had to move it several times since that pic to accomodate its growth......I have to keep it on the bottom since its reach is about 18" up into the water column. The pic above is about a month old and was taken right after another accomodation move. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it in the future....it's starting to become a problem. I really don't want to frag it up....but, I may have to one day. About a year ago, I sold off my purple goni for similar reasons....but, I'm kinda attached to this red one.

I do have a question for you though. About 3 years ago, I acquired a very bright green goni that came out of Bali......IMO, it was very bleached......but this goni has retained this coloration for over 3 years now and has grown from a quarter size piece to the size of a softball. I keep it towards the rear of my tank because it messes up my camera.....but, it's still directly under a 400 20K bulb. I still think it's bleached looking...but, it keeps on doing it's thing. Any thoughts ?

I have a bright green one too that's florescent that later I read was probably bleached. I've had it a month. At first it extended but now it doesn't extend all the way. I'm thinking of moving it to a lower flow tank with a little less light and see how it does.

I also just got a red stutchberi and it was doing great till a fish started picking on it, so I moved it also to the other tank. I will be getting rid of that fish. Thanks so much for your responses. How often do you target feed your gonis, those that do? I have Liquid Life right now they seem to like.

It looks and sounds healthy enough to frag without any problems (e.g. brown jelly).

I am linking these first two photos because they do not belong to me, but does it look like this?

or like this?

The Goni in the first photos, I have seen several examples of which have remained that color for at least several years in each instance. There doesn't appear to be any brown zooxanthellae. It is not a bleached G.stokesi, but I'm not sure what species it is (I would like to have one to experiment with though :)).
The Goni in the next photo is a bleached G. stokesi. You can see a little brown coloration in some of the more shaded tentacles/polyps. I think if yours was a bleached stokesi under that much lighting, the tentacles and polyps would have shown increasing signs of stress until it eventually stopped extending.........which would have been long ago.

Mine also is like the first one, the greenest one, and looks like it's glowing even in the bright lights.
Can you post a picture of it?
Edit: What color temp are your halides?

I feed once every 3 days religiously.
