Goniopora

Could I get some advice on what to feed this guy (on a budget). Also, would you guys rate it as easier or harder to keep than frogspawn?

Thanks.

Usually Oyster Eggs or something comparable are a pretty good food for them, not cheap, but otherwise they are very tough to feed. They should also be target feed daily.

I would say they are more difficult than Frogspawn because of the difficulty in feeding that frequently and maintaining good water quality.

Green Flower Pots especially are tough to keep.

No offense, but you probably should have done some research prior. Goniopora is an extremely difficult coral to keep long term, and can't even be compared to the ease of Frogspawn. If Frogspawn is like riding a tricycle, then Goniopora is like a 3 ring circus unicycle performer  Many people consider "success" just keeping it alive, not even taking into account if you can get it to grow at all.

Unfortunately the second issue is the coral you've picked also likes some expensive food, a good portion of which is only readily available online unless you a have a great LFS (or maybe some local club members have some). Golden Pearls, Cylopeeze, Oyster Eggs, Rotifer, etc are all some favorites.

I would suggest doing some additional research. Goniopora.org is a good place to start, as well as searching these forums.

I mix Cylopeeze, Oyster Eggs ,take a spoon and kind of grind in the cylopeeze and spot feed twice a week and the whole tank gets DTs photo oence some times twice a week mine is a little over two years old and has droped 2 buds the last 6 mo. it has eaven been in a BB tank with reasonable flow and still dose great as long as it gets small enougph foods IMO the will do great

Looks like you got some good advice from everyone. I don't read many threads where everyone agrees and I agree with all the advice given. Its unsnimous, food, food, and more food. One more thing, be very carefull of the flesh near the bottom of the coral. If this gets torn it is usually a death sentance. Good luck!

I did the same thing. I bought a Goni from a LFS when the guy told me it was "no sweat" to keep. I found out later it is considered difficult. But I have had it for a while now and it hasn't lost a single polyp yet. I feed it Marine Plankton (w/ Cyclpoeeze..its in a little squirt bottle, needs to be kept in the freezer) and I spot feed it. Its a green flower pot and its been thriving. I enjoyed it so much I bought a red goni recently. Really beautiful corals, IMO.

I have had good results with my red goni feeding it Coral Frenzy. I have them growing and laying down new tissue. I have had them for 9 months or so

Interesting thread...I've been considering one but have been somewhat put-off by the degree of difficulty, I especially don't want more work spot feeding if at all possible.

However, I do feed my tank twice a day utilizing an auto feeder. Right now it dumps in a double portion 2x's a day (I'm also thinking of adding a night feeding). I mix in freezedried cyclopeze, flake food and some pellets. Everything seems to be doing well, the sps/lps/soft corals and fish seem to be thriving.

So, do you think the auto feeder would work for the goniopora as well? or does it have a bigger appetite and need to be target fed as well. Oh, I also throw in (literally!) some meisis shrimp or brine 1X a week, it falls where it falls...

Thanks!

Mike

No.

To back up Johns "short" comment I think he means No an auto feeder wont work because they should be target fed........especially since they normally reside in lower levels and lower flow areas of the tank.

John Kelly,

I like the tag, "Goni Afi". Can you post some pics of yours? I am always interetsed in seeing different varieties and colors.

Thanks,

Steve
