Good days...bad days....

I've only been in the hobby for six months and have had 3 heaters of top of the line brands go on me in horrible ways..

All the money in this damn hobby you would think these brands could invent a foolproof heater..

really sorry for your loss Kat :(

It's a bummer.

Unfortunately, this is part of the hobby, overcoming loss. All we can do is TRY to minimize the losses.

I came up with an unusual answer to this problem (I almost had a fire). I put a space heater in the stand. It really smooths out the heating of the tank quite a bit. It would take much longer for the tank to heat it.

I also like the two or three smaller heaters to lessen chances of failure.

i don't even remember what kind of heater it is, to answer a couple of questions...it's glass...covered in barnacle stuff...the temp was almost 85. Right now it's safe to say i have lost all but maybe two of my finest colonies of frogspawn.

i am liking the space heater option, Kent. With the warmer weather approaching, i will be doing a lot of research and saving some bucks for an AC Jr. DC8....if anyone has one, can you PLEASE let me know? And you all know I'm dead serious when I say, "i want it"...correct?

Kat...you could always get the Reefkeeper lite as well...i run the lite right now and it does a bang out job. I just sent my email to upgrade the head unit to the elite, but the lite is more than enough...just my .02

Sorry for your loss. Are you sure it was the heat that caused the deaths. 85 degrees isn't that high. Could something else have been a problem? Just trying to make sure you actually fix whatever is wrong so that you do not loose anything else.

Sorry,
Dave

thanks, ricky....the very next purchases for any of my tanks will NOT be coral. I gotta save what is already invested. don't even get me started on what else is melting away up there. I did a water change...but probably too late at this point to ward off what has already started. Good thing it was 120% stocked...i'm probably the only one who actually notices the loss.

on the postive side...there is always a positive side....just gotta look for it....this new addition is taking my breath away...thanks to Rocky. This will fill up the bottom of a salt bucket....still a little unhappy right now.

Kat..I'm not so sure about that space heater option..there are plenty of other ideas out there that may cost a bit..but think how much a good option can save you in the long run..

thanks, Todd. I'm glad that if this had to happen, it happened now...giving me some time to fully research the direction i want to go in and how much i want to spend. That may be determined by the results of doing my taxes...which are spread out all over the dining room table...:mad2:
