Good EXTERNAL skimmer

I have seen all the rave about the MXS and ASM skimmers here but they all require In-sump installation. I don't have the space in my current sump for a skimmer. So wonder what are the best EXTERNAL skimmers out there nowadays? Or could I mod those MXS skimmers somehow for an external application? TIA.

No, the sicce would burn up without a lime loop. The bubble magnus skimmers are nice externals. Just depends on how large your tank is. nuocean.com have them.

Thanks for the info on the bubble magus. They look nice. However, look like the largert size is for 230gal while my total system volumn is ~300gal. The price on those magus are good too! hope they come out w/ larger sizes and i hope to see a bubble plate inside the skimmer too since it should help enhance the skimmer performance.

Those ab's push so little water they don't need a bp. They only push round 200gph water flow. Yea, i'd max them out at 200-250g but if your display is a 250g or less you should be fine. Otherwise your going to have to look at the external askoll skimmers that run 2x's that amount. Like the hurricone 2 external, reeflo's, swc cone external....etc all of which are quite a bit more. Or you can look at the atb externals and bubbleking externals.

Yea, the das ex3 would work. Then again the bm twin ab pump pulls 100lph less air than the das ex3. So i'd pry save the 200-300bux and get the bubble magnus one.

You could just go with a Beckett skimmer. I use a needlewheel in sump but if I had a large system and needed or wanted to run an external, I would just go with a good Beckett.

beckett's are hard to beat but the are electrical hog's
i had a mrc 2r on my tank and to be honest i regret getting rid of it
but they are expensive, check out the new skimmers octo is coming out with, if that bubble blaster pump is as good as they claim thats the way to go

Hope the cheap asian pumps last for the sake of those who end up buying the skimmers. Never mind whether they perform or not. If they dont hold up in general, for, what I am hearing is a 3 year warranty, I have a feeling that there will be a lot of unhappy puppies ;)
